Comcast (NSDQ: CMCSA) is offering residents in Minneapolis and St. Paul broadband services with speeds of up to 50 Mbps for downloading and 5 Mbps for uploading.

The company promised the faster speeds this week, as it announced its first Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications 3.0, or wideband, market.

Bill Wright, VP for Comcast's Twin Cities region, called the offering "a watershed moment."

Comcast said that the new high-speed option is the first step in several planned improvements. The company called the offering an "extreme high-speed service," but promised even faster speeds in the future. Comcast said it expects to deliver up to 100 Mbps in the next two years and speeds of 160 Mbps or more after that.

"This announcement marks the beginning of the evolution from broadband to wideband," Mitch Bowling, senior VP and general manager of Comcast high-speed Internet, said in a news announcement. "Wideband is the future and it's coming fast. We believe wideband will usher in a new era of speed and Internet innovation for today's digital consumers."

Comcast said that, beginning this week, customers using the 50-Mbps service could download 4 GB high-definition movie in about 10 minutes.

The new speed tier is priced at $149.95 a month. Comcast also said that existing residential customers with high-speed Internet in the Twin Cities area will also experience faster upload speeds for free. Comcast said its 384-Kbps Performance tier upload speeds will nearly triple to 1 Mbps, while its 768-Kbps Performance Plus tier will more than double upload speeds to 2 Mbps.

Comcast said its PowerBoost technology will let customers on the Performance tier download at speeds of up to 12 Mbps and upload at speeds of 2 Mbps. The technology will boost download times on the Performance Plus tier to 16 Mbps.

Oh, great news for offers more internet speed but monthly bill is kinda sucks.

I would able to afford it if I have good job paying, also depends on situation.

If you need use iTunes as primary for watch tv shows or movies then 50 mbps is choice for you, even you don't need have cable tv or directv.

Lol, we only pay $52 ish a month for almost 30 mbps with my connection. It's not capped, that's why. I think there isn't many people using broadband in my area.

I wonder the limits of the coaxial cable? What is its speed limit? Ofc cable modems, too.

30MBPS is awesome, and I would be more than happy with it.

Coaxial does not care the speed. It is modem DOCSIS version. 2.0 has limits, where 3.0 has higher limits

Im more concern about upload speed. 30MBPS is download speed, what about upload speed. Each VP requires at least 300 KBPS upload speed for optimal video quality if with coomputer then 350KBPS upload speed is needed.

Most ISP offers 385KBPS upload speed EVEN if download speed is 10MBPS, unreal!
