I just read this article...it's unbelieveable! I hope those people who live in Virginia will fight against this bill to make sure it will never take effective. It is grossly unfair to the women there. You can read this article: VA Legislative Sentry: Have a Miscarriage, Go to JAIL? (It's long, though.)

It's the most INSANE bill I ever heard of. That Delegate who introduced this out-fucking-rageous bill ought to be tarred, feathered and run outa Richmond on the back of a she-ass!

Yep. It is the most insane and inhumane I ever heard as Sable said. But again, that's Religious Right for you.

You really need to get your eyes checked since a REPUBLICAN introduced this out-fucking-rageous bill!

It sounds preposterous to talk about criminalizing women who suffer miscarriages, but one Virginia legislator is proposing just that. HB1677, "Report of Fetal Death by mother, penalty" is a bill introduced by John A. Cosgrove (R) of Chesapeake. Cosgrove's bill requires any woman who experiences "fetal death" without a doctor's assistance to report this to the local law-enforcement agency within twelve hours of the miscarriage. Failure to do so is punishable as a Class 1 Misdemeanor.

ravensteve, it is REPUBLICAN who introduced the bill. Not Democrats. Stop bullshitting/trolling around.

Edit: Here's Bio of John A. Cosgrove. His bio indicated that he is an republican.

That is stupid! Miscarriage are usually unavoidable. :fu2:

Ummm....OK The state wants to people to have a miscarriage. What is wrong with that. It is a health issue and should be reported.

What if its the drinking water that is causing miscarriages? What if the miscarriage rate is higher in northern virginia along the potomac then it is out to the west like Front Royal?

I believe statistics on this should be kept and I don't see why everyone would be against it so much.

We want to know how many people die from aids. We want to know how many people die from car accidents. We want to know how many people die from cancer. We want to know how many kids get cancer. We want to know how many people have hepatitis. We want to know.......
OK, so they want to know how many people are losing their babies. Nobody will ever know the cause of miscarriages unless there is a number to put on them.

Its shit like this that found it is dangerous for kids to live near those high power lines. Its shit like this that uncovered companies dumping into rivers because entire towns were getting cancer and having miscarriages.
This type of law gives power to the enviromentalists.

That article adds a lot of commentary and is certainly biased in how it is portrayed. It also looks like this bill was struck down anyways so why is there a discussion on it?

Yes stats can be kept, but the problem is the PENALTY and TIMING for failure to report by the woman having a miscarriage. She could be in shock and grief over the loss making her too distraught to report this to the nearest law-enforcement agency within the 12 hour time-frame. Existing Virginia law requires that only medical personnel and funeral directors report within 24 hours of a fetal death. The 12 hour reporting period and the punishment for failure to report this is too EXTREME, imo.

When a fetal death occurs without medical attendance, it shall be the woman's responsibility to report the death to the law-enforcement agency in the jurisdiction of which the delivery occurs within 12 hours after the delivery. A violation of this section shall be punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor.

While I am very shocked and outraged by this bill proposal, I can also understand why Virginia felt that they needed to be extremely strict in "reporting of a miscarriage". They are desperately seeking statistics to figure out why miscarriages occur.

However, the bill is too outrageous and definitely violates a woman's sense of comfort. No one in her right mind will call the state upon losing her unborn child and provide all answers. This lacks any common sense and sympathy for women.

I cannot fathom anyone willing to call the state within 12 hours of losing an unborn child - she would be too devastated and all that to think logically.

Jeez.

:-o that soooo STUPIDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!! i cant believe that!!! :fu2:

Dude, do something called READ. The dude is a jackass republican.

Virginia laws are too strict, I remember I watched this movie true story about two lesbians couple, the mother has a child because the father didn't want the responsible and Grandma took the child away from the mother of the boy and fought in court and Virginia court gave gain custody to the Grandma because they think the mother is not fit to be a mother because she a lesbian. I thought it was not fair at all. Now this Miscarriage bill is outrage the stupidest thing I ever heard. I think it is really nobody's business what cause the Miscarriage. What happen to people's right for privacy? Report the miscarriage in 12 hours?! My Gosh where the respect?

Your unwavering blinding loyalty to Republican Party scares me. You are so READY to jump at anything and ASSUME it is Democrats without checking facts.

Jeez...you need to get "unbrainwashed" and face cold reality that the Republicans can be jackasses too.

:gpost: ...Well said Cheri, I had a miscarriage when I was 3 months pregnant, there just no way on earth I will report this within 12 hours, It took me 4 weeks to get over from losing a baby after seeing the baby's heart beating thru the ultrasounds, :tears: It doesn't take that quick for them to heal after having a miscarriage, my goodness and I haven't forgotten about that day either!

AWWW!! when was this??

I agree that was a stupid bill!! Miscarriage is unavoidable! My mother had one before she had me, and a lot of other women do -- it isn't their fault. I don't think it's respectful to have to report just because you had a miscarriage so you can avoid a penalty. Gee....
