Is this distortion normal?

I know this may seem like a silly question, but I'm really not sure. I am severly hoh and I am finding that not only is everything extremely muted...but even when my ASL teacher wears an amplifier, it sounds jumbled...I really don't know a better word for it. It's just...unclear and messy...I can't recognize words like I used to, even with my hearing aids full blast and an amp. Is this normal? Thanks for the help! (I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I really have a lot to learn)

Yes it is normal, and means you have a loss in the area refer to as "speech banana."
