Is it safe to drive from South California to Cabo roundtrip?

Yikes, after reading your story, I already visualize like a movie, the moment you were in that situation, it was f*****g SCARY, then later you're in America...you and your friend can LAUGH about this. I believe you are more likely to be safe in tourist area, and if you are curious about visiting the other villages, you are more likely get in trouble. My friend backpacking all the way from California to South America (Argentina) and both of them (guy/gal) are doing fine. They share so much positive stories about people in villages. :dunno:

I forget to add, that you are right that we are OK when we were in the tourist area. We went/wandered off from the tourist area enter to the third world area where its NOT safe. We did not know that. We noticed that there are Lots of houses have windows with the metal bars. Also, No people out to walk aroundo walking but inside the houses with no lights on. We should not have been there in the first place. I think that being Deaf did save our life. The leader of the gang saw us signing and gesturing to them. My friend explained it to him that we wanted to see the oceans so we can swim. He shaked his head and his facial expression like he thinks we are nuts. He gave us a warning, and let us go. I believe that you may know some of our friends, one is from CA and her name was Darlene W. She was there with me. She was pretty brave.

I had bad experiences twice in venezulea without being in a tourist area but i was lucky. so i can image that it is the same thing as mexico over there that i heard some from my friends.so i would not go there without the tourist area.

What part of Venzuela did yo go to? I was in Caracas. That's the government city (capital) and it was rather scary! Guys (military) armed with rifles standing guard everywhere. There wasn't anything going on, it was just standard practice. But this was back in the 90's so I'm not sure if it's the same today.

Crazy as it is, there will be heavily armed people roaming about, but do-able in Both countries. This is not like the U.s., it's a whole 'nother world out there. Venezuela is always in some state of political revolution or another, so you may encounter rebel militias in rural areas, the cities are safer. Mexico is more stable, but corrupt as hell, they can barely rein in and enforce laws against any criminal, but no rebel activity (except for those indians in the south). You have to do your homework and heed any advisories from the CIA or US embassies in those countries. About the backpacking couple, I'd say they were lucky!

recently there was a guy who disappeard and the family was looking for him. They found his motorcycle and his body dismembered in trash bags scattered around it.

Where did that happen , how horrible. :(

In mexico somewhere, he was going to some festival I think and back...never made it there, did send text to family being stopped then escorted by military and that was last they heard. I will see if I can find the link

Maybe I should stop by at toy store in Tijuana, Mexico to buy a fake toy gun that looks like real and use it for our protection? Of course I will throw that toy gun before I return to USA. :D

When I went to Mexico we only made it as far Tijuana b/c of car trouble and on the way back to California we had to stop at the border and we saw a person having their car taken apart piece by piece ,some pot was found in the car and was a pile of junk on the ground . We're all  and glad we had nothing in our car illegal .

I have heard lot of stories happening in Mexico. If I want to go down there as today, heck no. I have some friends who go to Mexico regularly and don't have problems but I wouldn't take risk of it. If you plan go down there, remember to get Mexican insurance and they do take USA money but they may cheat on you when given changes unless you know how to calculate pesos = dollars.

I also forgot to add, check with your cell phone provider to see if it will covers Mexico area as roaming service area for texting or videophone (FaceTime, Tango, Glide, etc), if not then ask to add for the trip then cancel it when return. You don't want to get surprise hefty bill that ruin your great time.
