Is asking for ASL help a bad way of getting to know someone?

I recently started talking to a guy that I see in class every other day. For awhile, we would send big paragraph-long messages to each other online and I really started to like him. I'm really shy (especially when signing and he's Deaf), though, and I find it hard to talk to him in person. I'm worried he'll think I'm not interested in getting to know him because I never say more than "hi" when I see him.

I thought it might be easier to talk to him if we establish beforehand that we're going to meet up or talk. Do you think it would be rude to ask him for help with my signing? I'm doing a presentation in my ASL class and the help really would be beneficial, but I also just want a reason to talk to him. I don't want it to seem like I'm just using him to improve my signing skills!

Opinions and advice are much appreciated! :)

I wouldn't ask him that directly... let HIM decide to help you (guys like being helpful). Tell him you are learning sign and want to get better, but you don't always have the opportunity to sign with other people.

That opens the door a crack without you overtly asking him to teach you. He can then decide to walk through or not. But if he doesn't offer, don't keep asking (thinking he didn't understand).

Hope that helps! Don't forget to update with results (good or bad). :)

I don't know the guy. I hope the guy doesn't think you're "using" him because you need help with ASL presentation or ASL class. Some guys may take it the wrong way.

Yes, give it a shot. I'm sure the guy will be happy to help you learn sign. He will appreciate any effort to communicate with him.

I tend to be WAY too shy to ask a guy out, but if I have an "excuse" I go with it. (Keep in mind I'm single so take this advice as just one gal's opinion that may not be worth much.)

I would tell him I was stuck with some ASL thing, and would he be willing to help me. Then we'd go meet somewhere, start to small talk, and maybe eventually get to helping with the project! You know Deaf people can carry on small talk for HOURS! Then at the end I would be sure to mention that I REALLY enjoyed chatting (emphasis on that) and thanks for the help. If I were feeling bold, I would suggest we should go get coffee/drinks/whatever again sometime. Y'know really casual, but leaving the door WIDE open for him.

Thanks for the advice! I sent him a message, so now I'm just waiting for a response. I won't be seeing him in person until after the holidays
