I got my hearing tested for free a few years back but have never been to a doctor about my hearing loss because I didnt have insurance. I have insurance now (obamacare) and its pretty horrible, seems nothing is ever covered in my plan.

Anyway, I was told I had high fequency loss on both ears, mild in the left and moderate in the right. Im wondering if this is severe enough to even bother TRYING to get treatment. I dont want to pay my primary phys, refered to a specialist, pay for whatever tests, and then be told that my hearing loss isnt severe enough for...xyz treatments like hearing aids or something.

I know its different for each state, insurance company blah blah. Mostly im wondering if other people here with similar loss to mine have recieved treatment, what kind, and how much of a difference its made. Then I can be more educated if I decide to go to my doctor. Thanks in advance!

What state are you in and are you working that require your hearing to be aided?

Im in florida and I dont know if I understand what your asking but I work in an office and talk on the phone infrequently

Not everyone with mild losses even wears aids. That said, it might be a good idea to get an aid in your worse ear.
And I hear you. Health care in general is SUPER pricey...and add dhh issues, where things usually aren't covered and it's awful! There might be some financial assistence, through VR (if you have a job) Other then that I do not know.

What treatment are you seeking? With the time you have had your hearing loss, it is not likely that it will come back with treatment. If you are talking about getting hearing aids, it is the rare insurance plan that covers hearing aids at all. Some insurance plans will cover an annual hearing test at no cost to you, your office visit to the ENT will be covered according to the terms of your plan (co-pay or deductible). Do you not have access to a group plan at your work?

Ok thanks for that info ill look into it. Atm im still a temp but I should be direct hired soon. I dont know what all kinds of treatments are available but I have heard that if you get aids then they can help keep your hearing from getting worse as fast, or something to that effect.

Rant
As a business owner I'm going to spend around $125,000 on health insurance before the year is up...

But back to real life.
I know this might be cheap, but have you thought about getting a new free hearing test from one of the “cheaper hearing aid makers”. A lot of times there hearing aids are much cheaper than going to an audiologist, but they use very old technology. This might be able to gain a couple years of better hearing for a cheaper price.

Back to being a business owner I recently paid cash out of my wallet for a lady to get a Beltone. One day she wanted to talk about some hearing issues and with me being a lot farther up the same creek I knew I had to do something to help her even if it was out of my own money.

Is there any truth to this? My hearing aids help to make use of what hearing I have left but I don't see how it can help stop the progressive loss. :hmm:

Hearing aids won't stop a confirmed progressive loss that would happen whether or not one uses hearing aids.

I think what the other person meant is if hearing aids will cause further damage to hearing loss that is fairly stable year to year (whatever amount there is). That I don't know- I don't know if it's true or not- my db level HAS dropped over the years but it's such a small amount that it's put down to getting older more than it is due to Power hearing aids (those I've had from the time I was a tot).

HA will help your auditory nerve from atrophying or at least as quickly, which is important should you need cochlear implants some day.

Costco and Sam's Club have name brand HA's (Phonak, etc.) branded for them at a reasonable price (at least reasonable for HA'). They employ audiologists to take care of the fittings and such too.

They have that? Thats interesting. Yes she told me basically that as I get older my hearing will get worse, if I dont treat it right it goes faster, if I use HA then its slower. Just because she said that doesnt mean shes right, but it keeps me intrigued.

so does anyone else have high fequency loss, mild or moderate and they got hearings aids?

I'm mild hoh w/high frequency <and possible APD> and considering HA's-

if u get aids u should mention how the help or not. a general experience. i wanna see others experience before i consider paying out of pocket for them in case they dont change much for my level

:ty:DeafNerdMommy,

there's only audi in my state who's able to test for CAPD in adults. She's about 2 hours away. My hub <wears dual digital Resounds - Rubella Syndrome> has needed new aids for some years and is currently trying to get some new ones. So, I'm kinda waiting and pondering testing for myself.

Yea my capd specialist was about 2 and 1/2 hours away but it helped me learn a lot about my hearing loss. I have oticon ha with the streamer pro.

I'm glad it did help:D There's another audi who's closer and who at least does know what CAPD is, but she doesn't test for it. I'm interested in her locally because she is familiar with Deaf culture as bio info. says she had Deaf grandparents <no I don't sign well but would love to see an audi who is Deaf-knowledgeable>

Well, still considering....may have to be something we do in Spring as we've had so many expenses lately.
