I need a legal advocate for the deaf!

Hello everyone,

I'm a Independent Living Specialist working with a deaf woman. We feel that she's been discriminated against, and unfairly treated by the County Court system in our area. One of many issues is that she wasn't provided an interpreter in court or told when her court dates were and then missed them. Obviously, the court ruled against her. We believe she has a Civil Rights case against them.

I'm looking for some referrals to info about Civil Rights discrimination assistance, an attorney, a legal advocate, or whatever help you could provide.

I've heard of Terry Ryther, a legal advocate for the deaf and an author on this subject. Does anyone know where or how I can contact him?

You didnt say where you are from. There are regional ADA centers to check out on and also there are local resource centers but I would need to know where you are from first before giving you exact information :)

I live in Oregon too. I have many resources. For three years I used to work for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Access Program that works with many state/county agencies. Have you contacted them? Have you tried Oregon Advocacy Center or ADA center at OHSU? You can PM me if you d like to get more information.
 
Yes, I've talked to Nancy at DHHAP.
Next I will call OAC and OHSU.
Can you provide a phone # for OHSU? Already have one for OAC.

The ADA center at OHSU is called Northwest Americans with Disabilities Act & Information Technology Center, serving Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington. Their TTY nbr is 1-800-949-4232 (V/TTY) or you can look them up at http://www.nwada.org.

Oregon Association of the Deaf can help out too if you want more people to get aware and help out. OAD 's President is Rennie Dayton and his email address is President@deaforegon.com. Rennie is a very resourceful guy.

Hope that you will eventually find an advocate for this case!
