Just found your forum when I was doing some HA research.
Little about me:
I was born with a hearing loss but it's gotten progressively worse over the course of my life. I got my first set of BTEs when I was 17. I am pretty sure I qualify in the severe - profound area. Without HAs I can have a conversation within 3 feet but that's about the limit of my hearing. I also have multiple tones of tinnuitis in both ears, which doesn't exactly help.
I'm researching HAs since I've decided to get some new ones. I only wear one now (it helps a LOT) but I'm going to take the plunge and go for two this time. I know I need them. I'll be asking questions on the proper forum. The ones I have now I got in August of 2000.
I'm also interested in learning sign language, I like the idea of PSE to start with.
