Hello! My name is Jacob, Jake for short.
I was born with 50% loss of hearing in both my ears. At age 4, I developed what was then called "glue ear", causing me to be 90% hard-of-hearing. Not sure the exact term to use right now such as "deaf" or "hard-of-hearing" - please forgive me if I offend anyone - I am still learning. At age 5, I underwent 3 ear surgeries on both ears. With that, I regained 90% of my hearing.
Moving forward, I joined the United States Army Infantry in 2006. I am now out and with an additional 1/4 loss in hearing in my right ear due to rifles and explosives (primary job as an infantryman/mortarmen).
I didn't find out about the born hard of hearing case until last week, so that's that.
I hope my time here increases my knowledge and love for the deaf culture. I plan on going to Phoenix College here in Arizona for an ASL Interpreter program starting in the Fall.
