I'm an ASL student. I'm just finishing up my first ASL class. I don't know a lot, but I've managed to have some really enjoyable times at different deaf events. (I'm studying to be an interpreter.) I'm a little shy, but I'd love to learn more about deaf culture.

Welcome to AD!

I too am hearing but learning ASL, I can't stress enough how valuable associating with deaf people can be to learning ASL, often I've found that just being comfortable trying to communicate with a person of another language/culture can help more than trying to learn the language in a technical sense...

A few good books you might want to read are:

*Deaf In America - Voices from a Culture (by Carol Padden & Tom Humphries)
*Inside Deaf Culture (by Carol Padden & Tom Humphries)
*The American Sign Language Phrase Book (by Lou Fant)
*American Sign Language the Easy Way 2ND Edition (by David A Stewart)

Hello and welcome to Alldeaf! Eventually you'll get over the shyness when it's time to strike a professional pose or stance while interpreting-- ;) Anyhow, hope you'll enjoy your stay here in AD!

Have a great day!
