A DEAF OAP is looking forward to receiving two hearing aids a year early, thanks to the Daily Record.

Cathie Leslie, 85, was shocked to be told earlier this year she would not even be examined by a specialist until January 2007.

She said: "I will be dead by the time I get a hearing aid."

But after we told of her plight, health bosses swung into action.

They promised she will have the devices within the next fortnight.

Cathie, of Kirkcaldy, Fife, said yesterday: "This will make a huge difference to my life.

"I like to socialise but I've not been able to speak to friends much because of my hearing.

"I had to give up bingo too because I couldn't hear the numbers. Now I'm looking forward to getting back out and about again in the New Year."

George Leslie, a local councillor and distant relative of Cathie, said: "I'm very pleased that something has been done for Cathie.

"She has been unable to interact with friends and it has been getting her down.

"This will improve her quality of life and she deserves that in her twilight years."

Fife NHS initially blamed a national staffing crisis for Cathie's waiting time.

Officials said queues for hearing aids were as bad across the country.

But yesterday they confirmed she would be fitted with a hearing aid for each ear within two weeks.

A spokeswoman said waiting times had been slashed because of a clinic created by NHS Fife and Fife Sensory Impairment Centre in August.

The number of patients seen each week has leapt from five to 27.

She said patients would now wait no longer than 17 weeks for an initial consultation then no more than eight weeks for a hearing aid

That's bad manners to keep people in need waiting. That's the bad thing about public health.

What is an "OAP"?

It’s an acronym for Old Age Pensioner—a term used in British public administration.
