The Director General, Legal Aid Council, Mrs Uju Hassan-Baba has advised that education of the deaf should be diversified to include technical and vocational training.
Hassan-Baba who spoke at the first Regional Conference on Empowering Deaf and Hard of Hearing People, in Kaduna last Friday, said such education should be able to impact necessary skills.
She said the diversification would enable those who could not endure the rigour of standard education to be trained in various viable skills to make them self-reliant.
Hassan-Baba called on the government to pay equal attention to education for all children, including those with special peculiarities.
“By this, both the persons with disabilities and the normal child will be able to communicate and, thereby enhance national development and integration of all Nigerians”, she said.
In his remarks, the President, Nigeria National Association of the Deaf, Mr Jonathan Tinat, said the deaf and hard of hearing people had suffered a great deal from poverty and injustice.
“A high percentage of them are denied their right to equal education and employment opportunities,” he said.
