POLICE in Putuo District said yesterday they detained a gang of 11 deaf and mute people on Monday, who are suspected of working together to steal valuable from cars stopped along the street.

Police said all 11 suspects hail from Henan Province.

Several officers were on a stakeout along Zhongshan Road N. as part of an unrelated investigation on Monday evening when they spotted a young man running desperately along the road.

Police noticed he was running from a Santana that was stopped along the streetside.

When police tried to stop him to ask what he was up to, the man ignored them.

The officers and several police assistants who were working nearby chased the man for more than 200 meters before they finally caught him.

The man, surnamed Hou, allegedly told police during questioning that he and an accomplice had robbed the driver of the Santana.

When the driver, surnamed Wu, stopped at a red light, Hou slapped on the car window to distract Wu. His partner opened the passenger-side door of the car and grabbed a bag from a seat, police said.

The bag contained a laptop computer, police said.

With tips provided by Hou, police raided the gang's hideout on Qilianshan Road S. that evening, finding large amounts of cash, several laptops and other valuables they believe were stolen.

The 10 other suspects were arrested the same day.
