This one decision by the Board of Trustees to revoke Ms. Fernandes' appointment has set ALL deaf people back 20 years. The deaf (oral & signing) are more divided than ever by this decision. The signing deaf wants everyone to believe that they want a president who understands their "pain & struggle." Well, ALL deaf people struggle. This age-old oral vs. signing deaf will never go away unless everyone understands that as a group, the deaf can be more powerful, instead, they let a radical/hateful few make the decisions for the entire university. The implications of their decision are more damaging, not just for the university, but for ALL the deaf in this country.
