can be either use Wordpad just like a word processing

Check out Google Docs, you don't even have to download anything

The only downside to this is that it requires the internet. If someone has a laptop and needs to work but doesn't have access to the internet, Google Documents is pretty much no good. In that case I'd agree with the other poster about downloading OpenOffice - it does work very well.

I DO like Google Documents for when I have access to the internet however, just because it's easier to save the documents online and access it from anywhere rather than have to transfer it between computers via thumb drives or other media.
 
OpenOffice has actually been forked due to complaints that Oracle is stifling attempts to add features, so you might want to try Home » LibreOffice.

It's pretty similar, but has some additional features such as being able to make the MS Office 2007 file formats.
