Free Online Sign Dictionary - NEEDS YOUR HELP

I am impressed and it makes me proud to be able to participate in a forum with people like you.

Hi,
There is a new online sign language dictionary that is unlike any others on the net at the moment.

This free service is community created - the users of the site upload their own video clips to help compile the dictionary.

This site has come online today and currently has no signs in it... it is waiting for anybody out there with a digital camera to record some clips and upload them.

The address is: Dictionary of Sign

This site has the potential to become the worlds largest collection of sign language, so get filming and help make learning new signs free for everyone!

Not bad, because there is a problem is: any video distributor by realplayer; SDK, or
someone else made their own video technology for this website that I don't like that. I want one video
for an example like: Youtube; Google Video; or at this
one video not too many. Yet, them are great video, good job!
:applause:

Well Done!

Hi All,

Thanks everyone for your hard work! - I can't beleive that we have got so many signs in such a short period of time.

I will be contacting contributers over the next few days to sort out payment for uploaded video clips (the first 2000).

Sorry I've been a bit out the loop again, decided to do a bit of travelling now that I have finished my uni course so have been on a bit of a road trip... will be on and off this site over the next few weeks.

Thanks again,

Simon

I don't understand. These videos are (almost) all Flash, so if you have the Flash player (which is installed by default in Internet Explorer and most other browsers), you should be able to view (almost) all of these. YouTube and Google video both use Flash, so it should be exactly the same as those.

It took Simon a couple of weeks to get that part to work, so the first 100 or 200 signs are in proprietary formats (whatever they were uploaded with), but the vast vast majority of them are Flash, which should work for everyone.

Hi Simon,

Good to hear from you again. Wow, it took us about 2 months to get 2000 signs! At that rate, you could have the largest signing dictionary site in the world in about a year. I've noticed that the "Users Online Now" counter almost always floats above 4 or 5 now. I'd say you're starting to get some traffic! Now you've got to figure out a way to rally the Brits and Ozzies to start uploading more! I suppose the signing communities are smaller for those two countries.

Anyway, it's been fun. Which would you prefer for us to focus on now, uploading more videos, or going back and attaching icons to the 2000 we've got so far?

I had tried on these videos of flash, and I glad it really worked. :) But sometimes, the video from my computer is not good quality that seems like slow-motion from my computer or something else from any of these videos? :dunno:

Hi Calphool,

Thanks for that reply, you guys have really done a great job. I'm going to work in the new year in getting the word out to the UK communities. I think, as you say, the communities in the UK and AUS are so small that it will take a while for the word to spread, but I'm pretty sure it will get there eventually. I have links with some of the regional associations so will be asking them to help out early next year.

Hi CCFAN,
The videos can take a little bit of time to download sometimes and this can cause it to appear to be in slow motion. The trick around this is to let it play once in 'slow motion' and then after that, because it is then already downloaded, it will play at normal speed. I am going to add to my todo list the task of trying to make this process a bit better, but that is low priority at the moment.

I hope you are enjoying the dictionary.

All the best,

Simon

I am definitely agree with you, it's great ASL website. This is better
than ASLPRO.com because that there have none of deaf person who its
signs in ASLPRO.COM, however, this website has deaf or hard-of-hearing?
I am right? I think this website has its who deaf person/people.

Calphool,

Please keep going, don't give up; keep up going for your website! It's better
than ASLpro.com. Because this it is has a deaf/hard-of-hearing people
are in this site. :) I love your website, your video is great!

I hate to break it to you but because of Eolas patent, Microsoft had released an update which "forces" you to click in an inactive ActiveX control before you can interact.

The news: Microsoft updates IE after patent spat | Tech News on ZDNet
A couple of work-arounds here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/d.../author/dhtml/overview/activating_activex.asp

I didn't mean to go off-topic but software patents are just too obvious... When you begin to watch a flash, in my experience, the tooltip blocks the top of the video, telling me to press Spacebar or Enter or click in an ActiveX control.

Anyway, I have some few things I would like to comment:

Some of the images (if I went to ASL section and clicked "A," as an example) like this:
main.php
may not be approperate for children. So it's better to establish certain rules that would make it approperate for all ages, like no porn, for example.

I would HARDLY consider a fully dressed pregnant woman to be "porn"... but you are right, there should be rules as to the pictures... I think there needs to be a better way of listing the signs alltogether... the large thumbnails seem a bit disorderly and hard to sort through.

Inappropriate Content

Hi,

Thanks again for your messages.

I'm sure you can all appreciate that as a new website it's going to take a bit of time for us to run through all the different issues.

I agree with you that the content of the dictionary does need policing as there is a chance that people may post inappropriate material on the site. I have included on the upload page a paragraph that explains that inappropriate content will be removed - maybe this needs to be expanded?

I try to regularly review the signs to check for inappropriate content and do not feel that anything posted so far is in need of censoring. I realise that in certain areas there is a fine line between educational and inappropriate content, but in my opinion this has not yet been crossed.

A feature that I am hoping to implement is a reporting system. This would be a link on the pages for the sign that allows you to report to me a link that you feel has been wrongly listed or has inappropriate content. On receipt of such an email I would investigate the claim and then delete the questionable sign if I feel it necessary. I think this will enable us to keep a tight regulation on what is being listed in the dictionary - however I do not feel it appropriate to censor (as has been suggested to me in emails) the inclusion of slang, or even swear words, as these words are an everyday part of the language. (I am not the only one with this opinion, these words are found in dictionaries for other languages, including the official printed British Sign Language Dictionary).

As far as the layout of the site goes I realise that it appears a bit chaotic, however I feel strongly that this site should be accessible to all sign language users, including those who use sign language as their first language and whose English reading skills are not so strong - the use of images as well as words to browse the dictionary will allow these people to more easily find the sign that they are looking for.

Although I will not have the time to make structural changes to the site until February I would really appreciate any suggestions that you guys have as to how to make it more effective.

Thank you all very much for your hard work so far.

For those who celebrate it - Merry Christmas!
