Hello, When I started really losing my hearing I was a waitress and as it progressed of course i could no longer do that. Looking for a job after that has been very depressing. I do not know ASL and I am profoundly deaf now. Just wondering what kind of work (or if you work) you are in.

By the way I don't work now. I have four kids so I am a full time mommy, cook, chauffeur(SP), and referee. LOL

I was born profoundly deaf in both ears and didnt know ASL...here are the jobs I have worked

Fast food restaurant cook for 3 years
worked at a bookstore for 1 year
worked for Farmer's Insurance for 3 years starting out as a mail clerk, auto coder, and then data entry (full time)
then, I worked for a construction company as a file clerk and courier
worked as a teacher's aide for a self-contained deaf ed program at a public school
worked at a temporary agency doing various jobs in the Washington, DC area (mostly filing and data entry)
worked as a grad assistance for Office of Students with Disabilities
got a full time teaching job as an elementary Deaf ed teacher
also at the same time, got a full time job as a resident counselor at a group home

Right now, I am still teaching and work part time as a resident counselfor at a different group home.

The first 6 jobs, I wasnt fluent in ASL so ASL wasnt required.

Yeah, I moved to the kitchen after I couldn't waitress anymore and I loved it! I cooked for 7 years.

It was suggested by my Audi that I quit that job because of the constant loudness of the hood system. I cooked at other places after that but it just wasnt' the same.

Wow Shel, that's a lot of good stuff there.

For me:

Worked as a CNA at a hospital, then a prep person at Western Sizzlin, then Manager Trainee at Burger King, then data entry for a collection agency for 3 years. Worked as a teller and then mortgage processor for a Savings & loan, head cashier for a grocery store. then did data entry for Pepsi Cola, then head teller at a Federal Saving Bank, then complaint specialist and filing for the Better Business Bureau. From there, I was a phone rep for a telemarketing company but quit after 2 weeks. Was a CNA in an Alzheimer's ward at a nursing home, a cashier at Sam's Club, then data entry and billing for a counseling agency. Now, I no longer work at a paying job, but I have more than enough to do.

I'm a Kennel Assistant at an animal hospital. Nothing beats being around what I love all day...Dogs and Cats. Although it's not the best job as far as duties are concerned ( you deal with dog poop more than most ) I cannot picture myself being anywhere else. However as far as a career...I have two loves animals and genetics. I was in college (pre-med student) around 2001 until my mother died from cancer and I just went a little bonkers and dropped out and focused on where I work more than what I really want to do. I love both areas but would prefer the M.D ( not D.V.M ) after my name. I will be going back as soon as I get my ducks in a row. It pays the bills at least :)

I am a mail room clerk for 12 years, still learning and perfecting asl. I also do database management and entry for the department. I am acting as an assistant manager.

Still, I do not like the job but the insurance and benefits are quite nice. It pays the bills without putting undue stress on my husband.

If you liked your cooking job and were already profoundly deaf why did your audi want you to quit? (just wondering)
If you are managing well and happy at home then why not enjoy it? It is a very important job to your family.

Lessee, first job was camp counselor at a day camp for the Deaf.
2nd - Popcorn girl at movie theatre. Perpetually stank of vinegar that we used to clean the insides of the machine.
3. Data entry for Independent Living Organization. My job was to catalogue their library. Had to go through each piece of literature to come up with key words for them in the database. that was a really interesting job, going through the literature.
4. Gofer, props buyer for films. My ex was a production designer so I did a lot of work on film sets.
5. graphic designer for films - did props like soda bottle labels, posters, cereal boxes, book covers, etc etc. This was really fun work because they work on such a tight deadline that they give you total design control. But very high pressure field - films. You're expected to stay up 36 hours to meet the deadline if you have to.
6. website designer
7. freelance graphic designer - started up my own company
8. also started up another company selling tango shoes I imported from Argentina.
9. semi-retired. Helping my sister get her website launched. A lot of advocacy work.

I am unaidable in my right ear and my left is severe to profound but able to be helped greatly with a hearing aid. I am completely deaf without the aids but the help aided on the left is a big difference. I have progressive and he said since I have so little left I should think about trying to get out of there so I keep it as long as possible. And I agreed. The place I was working was rather loud compared to some. Their kitchen was really tiny but we had a huge hood system due to cramming so much equipment on the line. Other places I have cooked at haven't been that bad but there is still the constant noise.

Wirelessly posted

I am first and foremost a mother of 7; a Bible teacher; I teach my children homeschooling; I also assist my husband with writing official letters and with public relations; an advocate for human rights and peace; humanitarian work.

Hi, you don't need ASL to work jobs. Find jobs you like to work and bring home the bacon.

I've worked---

Food service as busser, prepper, line cook, the occasional job or two in other positions. I started working in food service at a company with restaurants all over the country so I can fall back on food service if I ever needed a job no matter where I am..

Biomedical photographer
Forensics photographer
veterinary school photographer including calls and surgeries
Crime scene, aerial, darkroom, slides, trauma and other things.
Security officer for an air cargo company plus on-board flights overseas
Security supervisor for the above and more of on-board flights and site checks
HR supervisor
Prep manager for a small crepe company with many sites and events to send food to.

More food service (back in the company when they opened more restaurants!) leading to where I am now as a catering company owner and working from home when not busy with my children.

My job involves helping Deafies like you fixing their Videophones. I have the feelings that I have met many of you and may not realizing it was you.

I run an infant Montessori childcare-from home 4 kids - and work Ebay on evenings and weekends. :D

last job- head teacher - toddler class - 2-3 year olds...
previous- head teacher- pre K at a Christian preschool. Full bennies
Previous - head teacher at a Montessori school.

In the future I want to learn conversatrional ASL- finish my advanced counseling certificate- 2 classes from my BA in Ministerial arts- would love to counsel HOH/Deaf in the community as an outreach. Considering a BA in Early Childhood Ed- there is a govt loanm forgivenss program for those who get their BA in ECE.

I dream about having time to paint, travel and write. Husband and I are working on small open mic night-coffee shop gigs and a little recording- he does blues- I play percussion. :D
