You don't have to dignify that biased question with a response, but at least read this article and decide for yourself.

9/11 responders bill defeated by Senate GOP filibuster - CNN.com

Washington (CNN) -- Senate Democrats failed Thursday to win a procedural vote to open debate on a bill that would provide medical benefits and compensation for emergency workers who were first on the scene of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The motion for cloture, or to begin debate, needed 60 votes to pass due to a Republican filibuster, but fell short at 57-42 in favor.

While supporters said they would try to bring the bill up again, either on its own or as part of other legislation to be considered, the vote Thursday jeopardized the measure's chances for approval in the final weeks of the current congressional session.

The House previously passed the bill on a mostly partisan 268-160 vote.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg reacted to Thursday's result by calling it "a tragic example of partisan politics trumping patriotism."

"I urge Senate Republicans to reconsider their wrong-headed political strategy and allow the bill to come to the floor for a vote," Bloomberg said in a statement.

Republicans complained that the $7.4 billion price tag was too high, while Democrats said the government had an obligation to help the first responders to the deadliest terrorism attack in U.S. history.

The James Zadroga 9/11 Health Bill -- named after a deceased New York Police Department detective who had worked in the toxic plume at ground zero -- seeks to provide free medical coverage for responders and survivors who were exposed to toxins after the attacks.

Maybe this is a silly question, but didn't they have that already as part of the job of Police and Firefighters for NY?

I'm not clear on the details, Botts, but I assume what they have is standard health insurance. But even with health insurance, some (many) illnesses can become financial nightmares. This bill would cover ALL costs of healthcare issues related to 9/11.

Also, not everyone who was involved in rescue efforts, nor all the survivors, were NYPD/FDNY, so it's really uncertain whether they have the means to pay for their health care.

Aren't we all hard-working Americans that deserve good treatment. Gahhh. Just annoys me when people think health care isn't a right but a privilege. It's not like a drivers license!

^^^ biased response.

Who cares if they have hearts! They have BALLS!!...yes, that includes the women.

I'll give you that. Congressional democrats are spineless little wimps for the most part.

They may have hearts that perform physical survival functions, but they sure don't appear to have the ability to empathize.

Speaking of empathy, it reminds me of what Captain G. M. Gilbert said during the Nuremberg trials. He worked as a psychologist in the army during WW2.

"I was searching for the nature of evil and I now think I have come close to defining it. A lack of empathy. It’s the one characteristic that connects all the
defendants, a genuine incapacity to feel with their fellow men.

Evil, I think, is the absence of empathy."

The thing is, I don't believe many politicians (both Democrats and Republicans) are showing much empathy these days. It's self-interest that is a problem these days.

Thanks for posting that. I find that to be a very true statement. I also find that true empathy is difficult to find.

I'm afraid you're right on this one.
