Deaf center gets words of praise Abilene Reporter-News Mobile

Cindy Dearing says she had trouble finding work until Deaf Action Center Hearing Loss Resource Specialist Cynthia Maldonado got involved in her case. Dearing, who has had cerebral palsy and a hearing disability since birth, was referred to several agencies before Maldonado referred her to Not Without Us!, an agency dedicated to empowering people with disabilities. Dearing has been employed by Not Without Us! since 2009 and credits Maldonado and the Deaf Action Center with making her work experience successful.

“I have had a wonderful experience with DAC,” Dearing said. “Since I met Cynthia, she has assisted me in providing me their products that have made my work experience without any complications.”

Founded in Dallas in 1975, the DAC was established to eliminate barriers for the deaf and hard of hearing. The agency now has five offices across the state that provide accessibility and communications tools, counseling and communication with ADA specialists. Maldonado makes sure her customers have access to the resources the DAC provides.

The local office, located in the Enterprise Building at 500 Chestnut St., celebrated its fifth anniversary with an open house Wednesday.

Initially working in a division that provided free telephones for hearing impaired consumers, Maldonado never intended to pursue a career working with the hearing impaired. Maldonado said her work with the DAC has been an exceptional opportunity for personal growth. In the next year, Maldonado plans to attend Texas Tech University to become an audiologist.

Dearing believes dedicated employees like Maldonado are what keep her coming back.

“DAC (employees) are very caring and thoughtful and they are willing to go far in making sure their clients have the best service possible,” Dearing said.

Because of Maldonado, Dearing said her new job is the best she has ever had.

“My employment with Not Without Us! has been the most rewarding job I have ever had and I love it there,” she said. “The employees there are wonderful people and I feel like we are all like a family.”
