Computer users with no virus/malware protection

That is why Norton blocked it.

Norton is telling us a game has a virus or trojan. Some antivirus or personal firewall applications incorrectly identify our products as viruses and disrupt or block the software from downloading or registering. Other anti-virus are allowed that Games.com are virus free.

I've had 2 hard drive crashes due to massive amounts of viruses and crap when I had Norton. Also, Norton had corrupted my Windows on my Win 98 computer a few years back. I will NEVER use Norton ever again. I use AVG and my Windows Security features.

I have to second using Microsoft Security Essentials - most reviewers find that to be the best of the free ones. But actually I've never caught a virus on my computer, though as a computer science major I'm probably more savvy than average.

The even better solution is to run Linux and never have to worry about viruses!

I looked at user name "sneakernet". It sound like you are hacker (sneaker into their network).

I use computer since early 1970's at Gally's Main computer. In 1975-1977, my first homebrew computer (Poly 88 - Computer kit for my brother & Sol-20 for my brother's friend). In 1981 at RIT, I did some Clone Apple II (bare circuit board and many pieces of chips & resistors)Kits for few people. They knew, I have skill on soldering gun/assemble.

At my workplace, they have network computers. We use security at workplace.

That's shame, someone steals NTID's laptop. I do not approve NTID staff had data of alumni in laptop which is not safe!!! More like student did steal laptop and delete all data. Anyway, they did send mail to all former NTID/RIT students.

Interesting concept of "Sneakernet", I did laugh. Back in the old day, I wear only blue jeans and sneaker every day (with various shirt of course) at work. And I'm only deaf person in the entire company. So, when I ever get "broadcast" message to my old terminal (using Unix system) asking for help, I always run to user's cubical and sit beside him to review what is the problem. So, many of the employees saw me running all over the office and building so that is how they brought up a nick name "Sneakernet" cause I always walk all over the places to help someone faster than the speed of coax network. You know, many hearing employee can talk through phone for help whereas I can't use the phone. So you got a bigger pictures. Today, I still wear blue jeans and 1000th pair of sneakers.

About stolen laptop, yes, now they change a new policy that all laptop require to have hard drive encrypted. Now about this guy who stole the laptop was located in Paterson, NY but couldn't pinpoint where exactly he did all the activity there. So, it could be a short play on this laptop and dump it.

SneakerNet Vs. darkage

It's a well known fact that antivirus software has an impact on system performance. How much depends on a number of factors. It may be noticeable to some, but not to others.

I have a mid range Intel quad core PC with 3GB of ram. I also have Norton Internet Security which I got for free. Whenever I played Battlefield Bad Company 2, I noticed that it lagged a lot even when I had the settings at minimum. No, it wasn't a network lag. It turned out that Norton Antivirus was performing incremental scans. (despite the fact that Norton's interface made no indication of this!) I disabled it and the game ran fine. Sure, had I been using a high end machine, I probably wouldn't have noticed anything unless it was doing a full system scan.

Personally, I wouldn't run a Windows PC without some kind of antivirus protection. The risks are too great even though the drawbacks may be apparent. That's why I use Linux for my main PC. While it's not totally immune to malicious software, there's simply not so much of a need to have antivirus software installed, simply because it's less vulnerable.

That said, I would never pay for antivirus software. For most, the free alternatives offer sufficient protection. I personally like Avast, although I have used AVG Free too. I'm also a fan of Spybot Search & Destroy (also free) as that will remove spyware, which many antivirus programs won't.

How you know they did end up at Paterson, NY? That's not far from NYC.
About 310 miles distance between LBJ Building and Paterson, NY.
I do not remember what was brand of laptop. I think it was Sony VAIO.

Our company, someone stole computer with AUTOCAD and Photoshop in 11 years ago. They never find one.

The money in my bank account show where the money went and it was an investment company in NYC. I contacted the investment company to gather information and the security specialist in that company told me that he think it's a bogus name and address however he did have a recorded network tracking linked to that account and got the information of last known location.
All this happened about 3 weeks after the laptop was stolen. So, it took 4 days and got my money back. So who ever this guy stole a laptop was a sucker.

Is Microsoft Security Esstentials (MSE) good?

Someone asked how do we know MSE is any good? Cannot prove it, but it makes sense to use MSE because it is compatible with all versions of both Microsoft Windows and Internet Explorer, and it is free.

I have enough confidence in MSE that I even dropped both McFee and Norton, but they were both free because I am a Comcast subscriber, but I have more faith in MSE. Never have problems with MSE.

Yes, I am serious. We are not frost parent. We did not adopt her. One of my friend brought girl and her two cats to live in our house for short time. I love to have her live in our house. She accepts to stay here.

Maybe, we keep her two cats because both cats love to play with me.

Let be honest, I dont give a f%^k what they think or say about anti-virus programs or Microsoft Security Essential program which are best protect program as your Saviour and GOD? For fact- they are full of software craps!

I am with darkage and JClarke, unfortunately I aint use personal firewall. I didn't put any crappy anti-virus programs on PC since between 1999. Just using my own judgement (common sense)..
