Preston is set to become a centre of excellence for deaf students.
The prospects of deaf scholars will be boosted by the opening of the UK's first international centre of excellence in deaf studies at the University of Central Lancashire.

The International Centre for Sign Language and Deaf Studies (iSLanDS) will be staffed primarily by deaf academics and researchers.

They will research and record the many global sign languages for the first time and develop programmes to offer deaf students in developing countries the same higher education opportunities as UK deaf students.

Deaf Studies, including British Sign Language, has been taught at UCLan since 1993 and it is renowned for its work with the deaf. UCLan has more deaf students than any other university.

The centre's director Professor Ulrike Zeshan said: "People tend to be unaware that there isn't just a single, universal world sign language, and we feel immense pride that this groundbreaking centre has been set up by UCLan, keeping us at the forefront of cutting-edge research and development in the field."

At a ceremony to mark the opening of iSLanDS, World Federation of the Deaf vice-president, Feliciano Sola Limia said: "The inception of iSLanDs will have
far-reaching benefits for the global deaf community."

One of the first new undergraduate courses will be a BA in Applied Sign Linguistics, which will be taught initially in both the UK and India.
