I am going for all my testing with only two visits. My first is on May 31st and that will be all the main vestibular testing. The next they said a 1/2 hour test didnt say what it was, then talk to a psychologist or social worker, not sure which. Then we discuss the 3 brands of CI's and what will be my best one to go with. Isnt there only 3 brands total? Then unfortunatley its a 3 month wait. Come Sept-Oct. are my worst months for my menieres disease. Dont know why this is. It may be all the tropical storms moving up the coast, alot of pressure. I am going to bring this up at my Dr. visit to try to move the surgery if possible up.They said they are so busy implanting children right now. My husband will be starting a new job and at first I wasnt worried about taking care of myself but after reading what Deafmama went through and others I'm wondering now if I can be on my own.

They are too busy implanting children now? That is not a good excuse..u have the same rights for an immediate appt. Wow, what's wrong with these drs...U have the right to the same services as those children being implanted.

Sometimes Drs dont think of the patients' best interests. That comment alone shows me that very clearly.."too busy implanting children" Hello?? Other patients need follow ups too. Sorry for this rambling but I have a very bad experience with drs not looking out for the patients' best interests.

Well I didnt think of it that way,I figured maybe the OR was booked solid. I better not be being pushed back to get the kids done while schools out! Ive got a kid in school too that needs me.Plus I WANT TO HEAR!!!!!!!

I know you'll hate me for suggesting this but could you possibly wait until November outside your worst time? Do you also have any family members who would be prepared to come down and stay with you for a few days? I would do this even if you have a straightforward surgery because taking it easy means a faster recovery. You have a kid too don't you?

Mind you, I had my inlaws come down within days of surgery for their annual holiday at our place and I still had to cook for them :pissed: MIL is a good cook too!

In the socialised medical sector here in Australia, you can wait as long as 3 years as an adult to get your CI, due to the fact that they prioritise children. I'm guessing they do that because of the window of language development in the first 3 years of the child's life?

Anyway, even though the socialised medical system is free and anyone who qualifies for a CI will get one, most adults who don't have insurance promptly join a fund, then wait out the 12 month waiting period and get their CI in the private sector that way because it's faster.

Wow. I don't think it's fair that they put the children first over adults. But I am guessing it's cause of the 'window of language' oppurnities. But still that shouldn't force you to wait longer esp since you have issues with MD. :/ My Dr. was only booked solid for the first 7 wks from the time I met him for the first time to the day of my surgery so a 7 wks wait is nothing compared to what you'd have to do- 3 months! Ack!

Do you have kids? If so, how old are they? Also, do you have someone that could stay with you for the first two days? I'm sure if my husband doesn't work from home, I would have been fine with him going to work by the 3rd day as much as I'd hate having anyone leave me. lol.

In fact, today, 3 days post op - my husband and both kids has just left to run some errands while I stay here alone and I'm already wanting them home with me. Even thought I'm doing okay now. :)

I think it's just the first 2 days that is the most hardest... the rest is fine. Except I'm not sleeping well at night at all. :(

When you go in for your appt try to explain that you want this asap, maybe ask if you can wait just a month shorter if they can squeeze your surgery in.

Good luck!

To wait to get a surgery, that I can understand but for a follow up? Wait that long? Unless this is not a follow up..if not, then my bad for misunderstanding.

Holy shit. I wouldn't even be cooking. I still don't cook shit at 3 days post op! I don't plan on cooking for probably a week. I wanna rest all I can so i can heal faster!!!

I do have a son who will be17 next week and i suppose could be a wonderful help to me but i hate to put so much on a childs shoulder's.I asked him on a good hearing day if this was rough on him(my going deaf+sickness along with it) and he said no i'm used to it.Dammit I wish he didnt have to be used to it. I went bi-lat. with menieres when he was 8 months old though so I guess its the only way he knows me.Makes me sad.I live in a mother/daughter with my mom and you would think that would be a wonderful help-ah no! When I came out of a 5 hour ear surgery i looked like the kid from the 1776 painting who had the bandage around head, she took one look at me and passed out. They didnt look happy having to deal with that and me as really sick from all the gas they gave me.then when i was in the labor room and had a contraction she felt faint and actually climbed into bed with me!HAHA! Of course they booted her right out.I unfortunatly cant trust her on cooking as I broke 3 ribs slipping off a stair on my deck. She came down to my kitchen and was making dinner told my son get me up,raw meat&veggies all on same cutting board.I said Mom you are cross-contaminating! Her response was it all gong down the same pipe. Can you imagine getting food poisoning right after implant surgery! Nope think I'll cook and freeze and maybe rent a walker or something.R2D2 Ive thought about waiting also but if its a bad autumn it may still be a bad time dizzy wise anyway. Then also going into holidays ect.Just want it done. Really looking forward to getting together with extended family and being able to participate so much!!sick of being on the sidelines or even worse outside with the smokers. Thanks for the links deafmama.so you think you do ya(which CI) hehe. Take A Guess.

Wow. Your Mom sounds crazy, lol. How'd she raise you if she couldn't even deal with cooking? LOL.

I'm betting you're going with AB cause I remember you talking aboot the Harmony. . . am I right? :) I get a cookie if I'm right, even if you end up changing your mind and went another brand. :P

Dont like the looks though, looks uncomfortable and squareish.Harmony fav. look. But and big but(like mine haha) FreedomSmartsound has great features with beam ,adro whisper and autosensitivity. So I like to have those options Just hate constantly fiddling around.Guess Ill have to see when I go.sigh!

sorry your link got me farther into to med-el.Not like futrther into med-el.You still get a cookie!Smile!

I'm sorry I got you even more confused than you were but that is good in a way 'cause otherwise you'd not have realized there was another brand out.
I have heard from the other Freedom users that they really don't even fiddle with their prgms much, that too scared me at first as I told my Audi that I didn't wanna be switching back and fro all the damn time & she said that most Freedom users don't. It's only for certain situations & besides you gotta remember, different things works with different people. What works for person a, may not work for person b. The freedom's features are why I went with Freedom, plus their battery life besides as I stated I only had the choice of Med-El or Freedom and I of course went with Freedom over the Med-El [No offense to Med-El users, it just wasn't for me, that's all!]

Anyways, Tami Sam, you've got time to pick out the one that you want, but my advise is to go with your heart. You will know what to go with! :]

I appreciate the sites Mama good to know not alot of fiddling with smartsound. Now I'm leaning towards it.At this point just going to let the experts weigh in after testing.

Tami Sam, keep me updated on which one you're gonna go with. I am very excited for you as you go thru your CI journey. I feel so bad for you having to wait an extra 2 mos compared to me. But then again, I feel more for that other person who has to wait 5 yrs! Holy shit!

I will totally keep you updated mama,I know I dont feel bad after hearing about socialized medicine and the wait.Thats awful! When I was on a coping meniere's group years ago there were people who actuallt moved to Canada and became citizens because the couldnt get Social Security thus medicare and didnt qualify for medicaid. It really leaves many falling through the cracks. Many are way to sick to work or fight the system. I got a lawyer and help and wad lucky but it took me years!
