Boy banned from school bus because of odour

A 140kg TEENAGER with chronic health problems in New Zealand has been banned from using a school bus because of his strong odour.

The 13-year-old's family have complained to the Human Rights Commission after being told the student who goes to Kawerau College in the North Island could not board a Kawerau Coaches bus.

The boy is cognitively impaired, has cerebral palsy, experiences faecal incontinence and gets specialist care for morbid obesity that has been attributed to a serious bowel condition.

The Rotorua Daily Post reported that the bus company had sent a letter to the family about its decision not to let him on board, but the family claim they never received it.

The company said it was premature to discuss the matter before a November 29 mediation meeting with several other parties.

They included school and Education Ministry representatives, along with family members and representatives from the Human Rights Commission.

The boy's mother said her son ended up in tears one day when the bus pulled up and his sister was allowed on but the door was closed on him as his peers looked on.

The boy is in line for a stomach stapling operation but his mother hopes to get him exercising to an extent where the operation can be avoided.

They should focus his health to find out where it come from instead of ban him from school bus... *shake my head*

Oh brother, that is such ridiculous to ban from the school bus 13 years old boy due to his lack of hygiene as odor.

Unbelievable !

They (school board, team of educators, etc.) may have a viable reason for doing this, but the manner it was done or how it was done, which was when the boy was waiting to get on, only to have the bus door close on him. Now, that is extremely harsh and totally uncalled for!! I can see that this manner (situation) will put all parties involved and hopefully a reasonable solution will be reached whereas the boy's transportation needs can be continued.

Yeah, talk about some children being exposed to the behavior of SOME adults at such an early age.

I don't know about over there but around here the parents would have been contacted by the school to have a conference and make arrangements for other transportation. It would not be up to the bus company to decide to stop transporting before something else was available since he was not a danger to others. The child's rights to an education would come before anything else. If it would take too long then the school would be required to provide tutors at his home or a taxi or whatever other way necessary to make sure the boy's rights to an education are not ignored. If that situation happened here that school and the bus company would have a big lawsuit against them and they would lose. How can they talk about "premature" discussion? They had no problem with prematurely taking away his ride to school and humiliating him publicly. Disgusting the way this was done to that boy.

Agreed. Though one concern of mine is his weight. He's over 300 lbs and he's only 13 years old. I wonder what he's being fed. Especially when the mother claim she is trying to get him to "exercise" in order to avoid the stomach-stapling surgery. Plus he has a serious bowel condition which is anal leakage, and he also has CP. So, he obviously is burdened with a lot of health issues.

I think there's more to the story than what was said in the article. I get the feeling that the parents aren't taking proper care of the boy.

Just a feeling I have.

What about anal leakage? I would say it's a health concern because fecal matters are bacterial and can be harmful if it comes in contact with the other students.

As much as I was outraged at how the bus driver closed the door onto him just like that. It's wrong. Period. But they do need to find a solution to the problem because it's obviously not going anywhere else.

Yes, the driver should be fired or suspended for demonstrating such a rude behaviour causing the boy to suffer a public humiliation.

its really unbelieveable story!

this boy need let join board than nothing! oh boy but need right as clean hygenic include like getting clean teeth, brush, and lots of mores that rules of school and also board too!

I agree with RR on this, they may have their reason to ban this child from boarding a school bus for a situation that has become a health concerned, this could lead to outbreaks of deadly diseases or chance of developing serious illnesses but however I don't agree with how the bus driver handle this situation by humiliated this child in front of other children on the bus and if the school did not hear from the parents, they should have found other ways to get ahold of them instead of going ahead with the ban. IMO

It is still not up to the bus company to make that kind of decision. Where is it said there was a health hazard from anal leakage? Hello, ever heard of Depends? Should we ban the elderly incontinent from public transportation next? There should have been a conference before anything was done so there would not be a lapse in the boy's education and certainly to spare him from an unecessary embarrassment in front of schoolmates. The boy must be under doctor's care because stomach stapling is serious and usually not done without prior screening and plenty of counseling.

Did they say he was wearing depends?

I didn't think so. Like I said, the article didn't say the whole story. I think the story itself is very sketchy and I suspect there's more to it. It's very one-sided.

How can a 13-year old boy weighs that much and not be considered a case of malnutrition? I would bet you that the parents feed him nothing but junk and processed foods. At least it would explain why he has a serious bowel condition. Bowel conditions are often caused by malnutrition and bad diet habits. Not even a thyroid condition would be that bad. It sounds like he need to be put on a high-fibre diet, something I'm pretty sure he isn't on.

I'm sorry, but I just don't buy the whole story. I think the parents are up to something here and I don't like it one bit.
