Beware of Nigerian Scams

Also, if you have listed your name on the DeafVP.com database or a similiar database, do not give out any AIM names, email addresses, or VP-100 phone numbers. I made the mistake of exposing my AIM screenname on DeafVP.com, and have removed it since.

I just got message from Boult and he suggest me to remove my sn from YIM, AIM and i thought about deaf vp. It would be safer because one another guy did chat with me and ask for my vp phone number. Which mean he was trying to explain to me all about money from VRS. :pissed: :pissed: it made me mad! if you want to know about it. I already post which can be fine named "QUESTION ABOUT VRS" from another thread.

I thanks god that Boult warned me about it

True True, here's how I prevent getting those emails, I simply have my filter set so that it scans the body of the email message, so if it detects the words Nigeria or Africa. The email is immediately discarded. TAKE THAT SPAMMERS!!
Remember, they will still be able to beat the filter.

I can say the following...

Niger ia
N!GERIA
Nigeri@
NIG3RIA

It's like the viagra spam emails. They say things like V!AGRA or VIAGR@.

Yes those email scams are a pain. However, I am sure that this subject has been talked about on this forum before, but since I am fairly new here I thought that I would add this to the discussion. I work, as a relay operator and over 70% of the calls that I get through my system are scam calls from Nigeria. They call these businesses, pretending to be deaf, asking for 1000 spark plugs to be sent to Nigeria. It is really frustrating to me and all other relay operators ( we have ways of messing them up by the way , HA HA ). However, this is something that I wanted to address and it is one of the reasons that I signed up on here. I took my job, as an opr, because I felt like I was doing a good service. ( I love it when a family member voice user says thank you for your help, or a deaf user types to me thank you for your help opr. It makes me feel like I am doing the job that I was meant to do). But, when I get a call to a business, that says, "HELLO GOOD DAY THIS IS REV SMITH IN NIGERIA DO YOU SELL SPARK PLUGS QQ PLEASE EMAIL ME THE PRICES OF THE SPARK PLUGS SO THAT I CAN PAY YOU QQ I AM DEAF ," I want to throw my computer into the wall. The phone system of relay is designed for Deaf people to make phone calls, not for overseas criminals to call businesses and people, tell these people that they are deaf and try to scam them. Now, I love my job ( when it is legitimate) but I HATE and DESPISE these scam calls. Now, another case in point,I get children, playing on the computer, when I announce the relay to them that say things in the background like " Oh this is that thing for the deaf but the opr has to say everything that we tell them to," Then they type vulgar profanity so they can laugh at me repeating it.
Here is my point, I took my job so that I could help Deaf People out. I took my job, so that I could be of service to people that have to use the relay for their sole independent source of communication. But, it is being abused unfairly. Sometimes, I have customers, who have been waiting for a very long time to get an opr on the phone because our cubicles are backed up with fraud calls. I had a lady, the other day ,that was needing to make a medical appt for her children that told the doctors office that she had been waiting 20 minutes to get an opr and had been trying for hours to get through. This was in all likelihood, because we were busy with scam callers.
There must be some way that they relay system can be fixed. Why I am writing this, is because I think that the deaf community and the relay operators should ban together to create changes to the phone service and restore it to what it is meant to be for. Sorry if I am starting a new thread on this forum, but I think that everyone needs to be made aware of this problem. Many businesses are refusing legitmate calls because of all of this crap. One case in point, the other day, I had a Deaf caller that wanted me to call a store and find out what time that they opened. When I called the place, ( it was a drugstore) they said "Yes we have had 20 to 30 relay calls in five days and they are all scammers in Nigeria wanting us to ship them blood pressure monitors,". The store hung up on me, and would not take my call, after being instructed to redial the store a couple of times, I broke the rule. Rather than identify myself as an opr ,I said " This is a phone operator with a Deaf customer on the line that needs to know what your store hours are,". I still had difficulty with the call because of the Nigerian Scam callers. How can we do something about this ?

So true! Where I usually purchase stuff for my computer, I haven't went to that computer store for awhile. Anyway, there's two things I needed to buy for my computer, so I made a call there to find out the prices for those two things I wanted to buy. Somehow, he just keep hanging up on me. I was puzzled and I was like I have called him several times in the past, he knows about relay stuff and now he hangs up on me few times. I didn't understand what's his problem, you know. So, I told relay to tell him who I am and see if he will stop hanging up on me. Finally I got ahold of him then I asked him why he keeps hanging up on me, etc. He explained to me that scammers has been calling him several times e-v-e-r-y-d-a-y from relay calls! Go figures! :pissed: It's BS that those people had nerve to abuse relay services, you know? :squint:

I found out about the Nigeria scam when I tried to make a traditional relay call to order a part for my printer after not able to order it online. I agree that this is a big problem. One of the post at Nigerian Scams using IP Relay - @ www.aimoo.com think that the deaf community should do something about this problem. I think that the general public should do something as we all are paying for this relay service. I have written an email to NAD and I haven't heard from them other than the form email acknowledging my email. It is not only scammers who are using the relay service. The kids also use the relay to make prank calls/porno calls. That is a waste of our money and time. What if a deaf person needs to make an important call but can't get to the operator??? Please let us get together in this thread to figure out what we can do. I am all for an ID card to prove that I am deaf. (so I don't have to prove my deafness everytime I am required to do so to get some service.) The card could contains ID number/name/password. If lost or stolen, replace the card and put the old one on the watch list for anybody trying to use it. Who do we complain to? That is what I am wondering about.

I don't like scam fake. I am not accept to scam is very bad. That is terrible. that is not good for scam bad..

With the economy as it is, and with Nigeria not being a place with lots of high paying jobs, there will always be Nigerian scammers. As a moderator at another site, I deal with them every day. They also have partners living in the USA that sign them up, bypassing the IP filters. All a mod/admin would see is an IP address from Kentucky, for example. Some of them have IP location changing software, to appear as though they come from anywhere. Then the actual scammer signs in from his Nigerian location and begins to mass email as quickly as possible. I have watched their activities via the moderator tools, similar to the AllDeaf spy thing. They like to post pictures of attractive men/women to act as their icon. They look for people that have been online recently. They copy/paste the emails quickly, with their Yahoo/Hotmail address listed. The reason they keep at this? Sooner or later they get a bite, then they begin the scam. If it never worked, they would do something else. All they want is your attention for a moment. They will attempt to draw you away from the website and into their "life" and find out what you want; i.e. a love interest, job, investment opportunity. They will tell you whatever they think you want to hear.
All I can say to this, and I do not want to sound arrogant, but this is what people need to think about: How can you even consider sending money, bank account info, credit card numbers, Social Security numbers, or anything like this to someone YOU HAVE NEVER MET??? I hate scammers, but they are a consequence of the Internet, same as Spammers. Anytime you get unsolicited emails from something that seems too good to be true, the best choice is checking the delete box and sending it to the trash.
