Best way to develop oral skills?

Misguided? Interesting. She is a fluent ASL user, has a Deaf child and works at Gallaudet.

As a medical specialist. Many people are fluent in ASL. That does not make them experts in education. Many people have a deaf child. That does not make them experts in education. And Dr. Cornett, the man who came up with the system of CS that failed so miserably, also worked at Gallaudet. As a mathmetician. He wasn't an expert in education or linguisitics either....hence the reason his system has failed so miserably.

ouch.... that's gonna leave a mark..... I better get outta here before the kitchen gets too hot

My son saw a pediatric neurologist several times. What's the point? The only information you have from those visits are the assessment results on your daughter.

And she is a medical specialist, not an educational specialist.

She has also been seen by "testing specialists" (their title, not mine) from both programs at the Deaf school. They have tested her IQ, both languages, and all her "other multi-factored evaluation" testing.

loml likes it!!

need more detail than that. how was her deaf child raised? works as what? is her deaf child a CI user? what kind of education and school did he/she get? etc. etc.

I was told that her child is a native ASL user. Both parents sign. He did receive CI's later in life. I didn't think to ask where he went to school...

Again, what exactly does that have to do with anything other than her specific test results? Which IQ assessment did they use? What linguistic assessment didthey use? Who performed the assessments? Who interpreted the results? How much personal research have you done regarding these assessments and the implications of their results? Testing specialist is not a title that would allow one to give an IQ test, and particularly not interpret the results of such.

hmmm I see. I think it's cheap to use him to prove your point when we and YOU don't know the details of her son's "deaf life story"....

Exactly. Nor does Faire Jour have any information regarding this medical specialist views on deaf education, language development, citations to research, etc. All she has is 2 appointments for an eval.

I can get all that info, but I don't have it on hand.
The person who gave the IQ test was a psychologist.
I can find it, with all the test names and all, probably by tomorrow afternoon. But, since it is no ones buisness, I will NOT be giving the results. They were given by professional that have been certified in federal court as "experts".

confusing... test specialists? and now psychologist? :dizzy:

Not in Utah school for the Deaf. All Kindy kids are full days. (As are all special ed classes here.)

Okay, then she is in the classroom an approximate 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year with several breaks and in service days built into the calendar. That is still hardly the majority of her waking hours.

This is probably rude, but why?

Did it have to do with your malpractice suit and diminished IQ?

Yeah, first the assessments were given by a "testing specialist." Now they were given by a psychologist. And I am not interested in the results. I am interested in knowing what the assessment instrument was.

Testing specialist is what they call the people at the school who do her testing.

We saw a pschologist outside of school.

So, who actually gave her the assessments? You have told us that "testing specialists" and then a "psychologist" gave her the assessments. Which one is it? And which assessment instruments did they use?

I don't think that ASL interfers with spoken language skills, BUT being in a voice off enviroment for most of your waking hours, 5 days a week, can. How can a child learn to listen and speak if they are not around it? The best way to learn a language is through exposure and immersion, so if their is no exposure, there is no learning.

Would it be ok if a deaf child got "ASL lessons" for 20 minutes a week? Of course not! That is no way to learn a language.

This is what I said.
