I'm also in the same field. I'm a Graphic Designer and also a digital colorist in the comic book industry. But let's also mention that the competition in any field of design is fierce and doesn't always guarantee paying the bills, especially in freelance work. Its pretty hard breaking into either industry. One's got to be better than the person next to them to score a job with a design firm or an established company.
But to follow through with this topic, one other good career choice is self-employment. Choosing a career in serving the public or providing a good on your own accord that people would want/need is a great way to make money.
