I got this link from my husband posted on facebook.

I just read this article on consumerist.com about geeksquad. Everyone who knows nothing about computers and people who do please read this. This could save you lots of money and will not make you look like a fool for falling for bestbuy sales tactics.

Best Buy Optimization Is A Big Stupid Annoying Waste Of Money - The Consumerist

Best Buy is notorious for its deceitful business practices. Enough said.

I never trust any laptops from retail store, except for online and Apple store.

I know that Best Buy can do dirty business but I just came to buy some games or movies, that it.

Newegg is probably better if you know so well.

Me too and my husband feel the same way. We don't trust to buy laptop from Best Buy either. He bought macbook and macbook pro from apple store at online.

Last August, I bought HP Laptop at Best Buy for $300. It is "opened box". My HP G60-235DX has Duo Core - 4300.

Intel Duo Core is better than Netbook with Intel Atom for $300 or any cheap notebook with lousy Intel Celeron for $400

I'm not surprised about this.

I can optimize my own computer on my own without having to go through that mumbo jumbo for an extra $40.

I can't tell which is worse... best buy or walmart.

Geek Squad literally sucks. They hired alot of people working at geek squad who do NOT have 100% experience on computers. I read alot of stories that one employer at geek squad don't even know where the HDD is. One would steal pictures from your PC to his thumb drive and take it home doing weird stuff to it. One customer bought his PC in that needed to be repaired for about $400 as they said they'll call him back when it's done, and he waited, waited and WAITED for a couple months and he went back to ask them what's going on, and they had no idea when or what PC he bought in, then they check in their system, and then they said his PC is beyond repair so it can't be fixed and he was like WTF?? then give me my money back since you can't fix it! they refused. So yea, Geek Squad is like a scheme...ripping people off at products they sell and are not 100% honest with anything they say. They NEVER care about customers. Only about the money. It's always about the money. Best Buy should be sued or be shut down for good!

We have similar things in this country- PC World (a shop) will do virus scans etc on your computer for a fee. They try to sell you insurance for things you are covered under household insurance, or consumer law, for.

That story is awful, $40 and they don't finish the job properly! I use a Mac, and I buy online, but if I was to need any sort of service I would think very carefully about where to go. My previous Mac needed repairing, it was out of warranty, and I sent it to a 'specialist' Mac repair place I found online. They did a terrible job, the casing wasn't put back on properly, and they couldn't fix the problem in the end. I ended up selling it, broken, and buying a used iBook G4 from ebay to use until I can afford a newer Mac.

I agree with you. I'm not surprise that they hired people without experience. Geek Squad is under Best Buy company. It's Best Buy's responsible to hire people with experience, network, CISCO certificate from college graduate. My husband took a computer science, computer repair, computer programs, windows microsoft, network, CISCO, build the device in technology classes at college. That is why he didn't trust to buy laptop nor macbook from Best Buy as Geek Squad.

Are you serious? Anyone with Cisco knowledge will be NOT working at best buy. They will be working for somewhere making at least 8 times as much.

lol yup. Let's see... geek squad makes like $15 an hour.. probably.... and an engineer with CISCO certificate makes around at least $90,000-120,000 a year.... and plus - Best Buy is not going to sponsor a person taking CISCO exams.

My hubby is on a geek squad!

Your husband works for the government. Do they call it the Geek Squad now? :hmm:

No, he grew up as a geek and is very good with fixing computers so he is always going to our friend's and families' to fix their computers. LOL!

I was gonna buy my laptop for school at Best Buy and I wanted the advertised model, they kept trying to up sell me and made up some lame excuse about the model I wanted to buy. Plus it had no warranty and Best Buy's warranty was sickly priced. Supposedly laptop's are meant to break nice and easy and really are just a waste of your time. I bought a Dell and I wasn't overly impressed with that either the parts looked rather cheap. I could be wrong but I believe Acer makes excellent budget PC's. Actually the laptop I had before that was an late 90's model and worked better for most intensive purposes plus the keys weren't falling off and the thing just generally breaking. I would suggest anything but Dell, anyone else have a similar experience. Btw, what is a good budget laptop windows based I may upgrade my old one.
