I just lost my hearing last year. I am trying to learn sign language. But no one around me everyday knows it. My boyfriend was just diagnosed with lung cancer and it becomes very difficult to communicate when he is in pain. I've been looking for a product that would translate speech into text. Well one night I was watching "Exteme Makeovers Home Edition" a few weeks ago, and they gave a young man who was deaf a computer and a program called "icommunicator" that does exactly what I was looking for. The costs however is about $5000 just for the program. You can see it @ iCommunicator 5.0. If anybody has heard of it or has one, I would like to know your experiences. Thanks Aliboo

Wow, that's a lot of $$$.. I bought a 2 cd-rom set which is "Instant Immersion American Sign Language" that has "Personal Communicator" and "Sign Link". (ISBN: 1-931102-95-3 CS-139 from Topics Entertainment) Personal Communicator probably works the same way as Icommunicator. I wasn't really thrilled about this program BUT some people found it very useful. I haven't seen how well Icommunicator works.
you can read more about it in Amazon.com. I see that it has been expanded to a 4 cd-rom set.

The hearing loss isn't that bad for you start but it is new for you because you will use your eyes and might be tired too easy until you get used it. I hope this is doesn't sound harsh.

The CD thing that can benefit for you and boyfriend learn sign language.

I want tell you that my wife is upset about my kidney is ending stage failure mean my kidney will stop working in several years later. God know when... My wife learn about my kidney result one week before our wedding. We move on and live.

I would suggest you to get Sorenson Videophone would be helpful and it is free. You can get free only when you have high speed set and you are hard of hearing. You can start learning how to read sign language for start and that way you can speak over the phone with your family even your boyfriend. Sorenson Communication is fastest grown for relay service. Roughly I heard that it already has over 70 relay center.

We glad you have here!

Thanks Everybody for your suggestions. It's all been so overwhelming that I can't think. I've had to learn to ask for help. So Thank You All, Aliboo

I never heard of that program called icommunicator, this is new to me, and too expensive in my opinion, better off with Sorenson Videophone because it's free in the United States. I'm still on the waiting list to get mine, I'm out of patience.

I've heard of the iCommunicator software before, it's not for communicating over a distance like a video phone, it's for communicating in the same room.

it's software that takes the place of an intrepeter and real-time captioning. The person speaking (a teacher for example) wears a wireless microphone and talks. the software converts their voice to text that gets displayed on the screen. In order for this to work, the speaker has to train the software to recognise their voice.

It is very expencive, but so is having an intrepeter or a stynographer every day. in the long term the software is much cheaper.

If you want to convert speech into text, try Dragon Naturally speaking.

Dragon Naturally speakinng 9 (standard) is only $99
Nuance - Dragon NaturallySpeaking Standard 9

Like any speech to text program you will need to train it and that takes time.

I Need Something That translates

This is exactly what I need is something that translates in real time. I will check out all the programs you all have suggested. So far the icommunicator is the most advanced of technology. Most people have never heard of it. I saw it on Extreme makeovers home Edition. Like all other technology it is expensive until it is more widely used/bought. They have the technology for everything else. Deafness is put on the back burner. I appreciate everyones advice. I get tired of the "Dear in the headlights" look when I go ask anybody anything about this kind of technology. Thanks, Aliboo

In my research I came across some south african company that tried creating a phone for the deaf and HOH.

it was called 'the Teldem' and was created by tenko i believe, at the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, University of Cape Town.

I was going to continue my research on those devices tomorrow and i'll let you know if i find something worthwhile...

there are some good references here if you are interested in advance.

Very cool and I'd like to try it out, but let's (please) keep the thread ICommunicator-related.

Right... I was just searching for alternatives since most people seem to agree that that thing was too expensive. So... if I do happen to come across something like the Icommunicator but affordable, you'd rather have me create a new thread?
