I was wondering if anybody has any problems with digital hearing aids, or specifically with Phonak (or Phonak Maxx which is what I'm wearing now).

I just got new digital hearing aids which costs me $1300 each from my hearing specialist on Aug 5/05, but the next day I started having this really high pitch ringing in my ears to the point where it started hurting. So I shut it off completely so I don't hear no loud noise (at the time I was cutting the grass). Today (the day after the 6th) the ringing has become constant, and my hearing has gone to almost deaf where (my right ear is the one that has the ringing) analog or digital has become useless to hearing anything. Also I can't tell the difference if the volume increases or decrease...well just barely anyways. I find that the digital hearing aids I have is not as good as my analog aids. I also noticed that I can feel some air pressure from the aids in my ears, although my left ear has more air pressure often than the right ear, but my left ear has absolutely no ringing in it.

Today I also noticed that I can't hear well on the telephone when I was talking to my dad on the phone and ended up hanging up on him cuz I couldn't hear what he was saying. My right ear is my good ear, and I was use my right ear when I'm on the phone. But since the ringing in my ear has affected my hearing, I had to use my left ear which isn't a good ear.

I can't listen to no music, whether through headphones or not or else I get the ringing again. I can't sit outside without the ringing starting cuz of the traffic (and its not that loud compared to my mother's music when she plays it outside). If any loud music occurs, I have to turn my right hearing aid off before I get a ringing in my ear. Even now as I'm writing this, I have a slight ringing in my ear, but it's not that loud.

I don't think digital hearing is the right one for me.

I hope you have informed them of your problems and gotten this checked out. It may just be a coincidence where your hearing has actually decreased not because of the HA. The tinnitus you speak of indicates some damage to your hearing and that is a concern period. Generally speaking, HA don't cause deafness in of themselves but the settings could have been incorrect or whatever. I have heard that digitals can be troublesome for uses.

what that? I am curious you can give me what kind example digital hearing aids?

I have no idea about this situation. Wow that is very expensive!

I don't use hearing aid but I learn something from you and I cannot imagined that hearing aid cost a lot of money! Damn!

oh your asking the right person... i have two digital hearinf aids... we get them free in england but if i loose them i have to pay £15,000 each... do... thats 30k (im extra carefull not to loose them)

i have a huge rant in this section about the problems i have had with my hearing aids.... i think there useless realy...

I wear a Phonak MAXX211 BTE - and have for about 2 years ...

Please go back to your Audie !!!! the MAXX is adjustable using the PFG software to help adjust a number of differetn things .. it might be that you have something mis-set !

I haven't had a single problem ( other that DON'T use duracell batteries they SUCK !!) after a few initial "tweaks" ... I had to have the limiter setting adjusted up a bit, the volume adjusted a bit etc - but since then I've been fine.

Please make sure you tell your Audie exactly what's going on.... and see if they can get in another MAXX for you to try just incase there's a problem with the actual HA ...

Well I made an appointment to see my hearing aid specialist for tomorrow afternoon, so I'll find out what's wrong tomorrow.

Today I had another problem. I was cutting the grass with an electric lawn mower (which is not as loud as the gas one) and the ringing in my ear (same ear again) started again. But this time it wasn't good. I came back into the house to rest and was sitting down on the carpet of my living room petting my dog. Suddenly I felt really dizzy, so bad that I can't walk without stumbling. So I took out my hearing aid out completely to give my ear a rest from any type of sounds (even now I'm not wearing it, and yet I got a slight ringing in my ear). Then a bit later I started to feel sick to my stomach, so I decided to sleep it off for a bit, cuz I really couldn't do much but lay around for awhile until the dizziness is gone. Now I feel better. So I would have to let my hearing aid specialist know about that too.

I really don't know what kind I have, but it says MAXX(tm) PowerMAXX(tm) on the manual. I think its PowerMAXX 411.

is this your first HA ?? or have you had a major change in your hearing that caused you to get a new one ??

One thing I'd HIGHLY recommend ...

don't wear your HA while you're moving the lawn with a power mower ... it's loud enough that you'll be listening to feedback/limiting for the entire time !!! which is likely going to give you a nasty headache.

the ringing/ dizzines / sick feeling ... I get that if I over-expose myself to noise.

personally I try to protect myself against loud sounds ( I'll either leave my HA in but turn it off, or use a custom made earplug to protect my ear)

HTH ... let us know how the Audie goes tomorrow

p.s. the model will be on the inside arch of the hearing aid ( the part that rests on the outside of your ear) - it's on a little plastic window type thing in small print.

This is my first time wearing digital hearing aids. But before I got these digital hearing aids, I had my hearing check up not so long ago, but it hasn't changed since my last check up.

I didn't have a problem cutting the grass with my analog HA. But now I've been having that ringing since I got the digital HA. I'm used to loud noise all the time, and never had a problem (well maybe a slight headache but that's about it).

Okay I checked the inside arch of the hearing aid and it says PowerMAXX 411

And I will definitely let you know how it goes tomorrow.

I totally agree with that. When I had my analog HA, would just mow without it as my philosophy was "Who needs to hear the blinkin' machine?". I also did for other loud sounds that were probably damaging to my hearing. Now that I have a CI, it isn't such a concern but old habits die hard. I refuse to mow with my CI on me. Same reason...who needs to hear it and I sweat too much

Okay, so I haven't kept you guys up to date in awhile. So what's happening is that I went to the walk-in clinic to see if there was any ear infection or wax or anything that the doc could "see". But there was nothing he could see. He recommended me to go see my family doctor to get a referrel to see an ear/nose/throat specialist and get an mri or cat scan on my right ear. But what I'm really upset about this situation is that in a few weeks I'm off to college and the only day i could get in to see my doctor is august 30 (school starts on sept 6). When I do see the specialist (may take awhile...probably up to six weeks before i can see the specialist...that is if my family doc gives me a referral) I'll keep you guys posted on this.

No, If I have plm with my hearing aid so I will stop by the ohana hearing aid to fix my hearing aid and it is a free repair.

lildyke, what did your Audie say about your hearing aid ? it's good that you ruled out any obvious infection, but what did your Audie say about the settings on you HA ????

If you're going to an ENT you might also want to ask about the possibilty of Meniere's disease - which might be responisble for your symptoms ...

let us know what happens

I am not yet deaf but will be fitted one in 6 months time could somebody tell if they are very hard to use

Well my audie didnt really say much about the HA, all he did was adjusted it to make it a bit louder. I got a different pair of HA, its a digital hearing with analog volume (HA type is Solo T+ 411 dLim), but i think i might have to get the new pair (temporary) adjusted, but i dont think that would really make any difference as i can hardly hear anything out of my right ear cuz of the ringing...its still driving me nuts cuz I cant do nothing now, cant watch tv, listen to music, play video games, listen to conversation traffic or any type of noise. I pretty much have to sit in silence :(

Pitch in HA

I also had this problem with the ringing in my digital HA. I had it for a while and everything was fine. Then all of a sudden, I had difficulty hearing things. I told my audiologist and she told me that the pitch in the HA may be too high for me. I can't hear high pitches very well and if I do hear them, I get terrible headaches.

Sometimes the pitch in the HA needs to be adjust. I don't know why, but sometimes digital things like the lights sensors in a room or certain headphones can change the pitch in the HA and you have to go back to the audiologist to have them fix the pitch.

You can try and see if that is the case with you. Ask your audiologist to adjust the pitch.

i have ite aids & the left one seems to buzzzz a lot.i cant beleive the cost of aids though :O( !

The ringing in my right ear is getting a bit better, but the meds for it is not working so its probably something else that's causing it. I think its probably being caused by my sinus infection.

The only time i get "ringing" in my ear, is at night. But this is not the normal ringing that i usually get. Its more of strange sounds, such as wind howling, musical noise when I am sleeping.

Oh and I forgot to mention that I am going back home to Kitchener to see my family doc about my right ear and a possible sinus infection that may have cause the ringing in my righ ear.
