Hi,

I am not deaf; however I am very interested in the Deaf culture and learning sign language. I started teaching my daughter a few signs when she was a baby and now I have become extremely interested in learning all that I can about ASL and Deaf in general. I really hope to one day teach ASL to deaf, autistic or down syndrome children and if I were able to get well versed in the language, I would also like to become an interpreter for the deaf as well. I know that this will be a long process, I have looked at many books, websites, videos, CD's and I am currently enrolled in an online class (I hope to take a live class by the summer time). However, it is difficult to truly learn ASL or any language if you are not communicating to a real person. I have read a lot of the other posts that have been really helpful, and I am hoping that someone can help me as well. Is there anyone who is in the Long Island, NY area that knows of any Deaf groups, that meet on a monthly basis that would take on an outsider, or someone who wouldn’t mind being a mentor? Any information would be great!!!

Thanks

This should point you in the right direction as far as ASL classes goes and I am sure they hold ASL classes, if not then ask them where :)...

Do you live in Nassau or Suffolk county? I live in Suffolk County on the south shore.
