9NEWS reporter Cheryl Preheim has the story of a football highlight that was the highlight of the year for many people in attendance. 9NEWS at 10 p.m. Nov. 22, 2004.

Sebastian realized a dream the day he scored his touchdown.

JEFFERSON COUNTY - In a championship season for one midget football team, the highlight of the team's year was a touchdown by a player on the opposing side.

Sebastian Sanchez, like a lot of 14-year-olds, is a sports fanatic. He plays football for a team in Jefferson County, but has never had the chance to score. That changed in his team's championship game.

In the game between Sebastian's Green Mountain Rams and the Arvada Nighthawks, number 88 got the opportunity to run with pigskin.

Up until that game Sebastian's autism kept him from getting much playing time. However, on that day, the big hearts of the nighthawks allowed Sebastian to realize his dream of reaching the end zone.

When the quarterback handed the ball to Sebastian everyone on each sideline watched him score and erupted when he did. There were no thoughts of winning, losing or rivalry. His touchdown put the game in perspective and showed everyone involved that winning isn't the most important thing about competition.

Weeks later, with a big smile, Sebastian and his dad thanked the Nighthawks for a moment far greater than just a touchdown.

The Nighthawks say even in their championship year, it's not the wins and losses they'll remember. Their fondest memory is the one moment when number 88 proved kindness is more important than competition.

For good measure, the Nighthawks did go on to win the championship. But, they say if they'd had to choose between the trophy and letting Sebastian score, they would rather see their opponent in the end zone and that smile on his face.
