Some of the best people I have come across in various paths in life do not have their limitation or handicap on display. They possess issues that limit them against a human who may not have no issues physically etc. If you took a little time to know them a little bit in passing, you will find that there is no handicap to speak of if you two understand one another. Ive had very few individuals who were that way in life.
I remember one suit of a very big mill in the midwest on a friday night. Stood on the stairway from his office YELLING at me across the yard with bad language etc. I finally walked all the way up there with the volume getting louder and words more filthy lapsing even into a touch of german for lack of english words... (There is a experience...) I bust out laughing when I got up to his landing.
He turned purple quit yelling and asked you stupid or something? I said hell no I am hearing impaired, All that noise from you did not mean anything new or informational until you asked me that question quietly. Now there is my rig, you have that load for me?
Silence. We assessed each other. He started to get big like a peacock in his suit and proceeded to lecture me on this that or other. I told him please save that for your new hires. Im here to get steel from you and be damned if I never see you again after it's out of your yard on the road. What is it? Now or later? (Seeing how upset he was for late etc)
20 minutes loaded. He had cooled way down since then and was able to be civil. For a few minutes i summed up my deafness versus trucking and so forth. He said that most of his people dont like to be around him but I was able to deal with him well enough. I just laughed and told him just leave off that cursing and noise and you will be fine. I hate bosses who yell and scream over nothing. He turned purple again....
Sometimes I think that suit likes that behavior a form of stress release or whatever. I never saw him again and that steel was delivered into Texas next morning straight through. What bothered him a lot was I did not seem to hear half the stuff he yelled with great energy. I told him again was that there was no words in there that had any informational meaning that applied to my position of picking up his steel. He thought that over for a minute.
Then pointed to a corner where my three coils sat waiting for me and said "THERES YOUR *&^%$ steel... can you get it with that *&&%$ forklift?"
*&^% yes.
Scares me that the Nation's Commerce and Way of Life runs on very bad language and conflicting personalities among the hearing. When I am with the deaf... the room is quiet like a cloister and if anything was said to you, you were a part of the conversation whatever it was. Sometimes that was the best part of it. The quiet.
