Hi all.

I'm wondering how we the people should try to educate other deaf people on HIV/AIDS*.

Do you have any ideas on this?

There are a lot of ways of educating others.

I've done a bunch of different workshops on AIDS/HIV.

Perhaps, you could try this...

Arrange a workshop for a bunch of people to attend (preferably no more than 50 people; under 30 would be easier).

Buy jelly beans in two colors, red and black, black and white, black and yellow, whatever you prefer... as long as it's noticeable so you can emphasize your point. (We'll use red and white in this suggestion...)

Buy small paper bags.

Preparation: Put a handful of white jelly beans in each paper bag. For one out of 10 bags, use red jelly beans instead. (9 white & 1 red; 18 white & 2 red; etc) Close each bag.

When everyone shows up, hand out the bags to everyone and make sure they don't look inside.

For the next 5 to 10 minutes, have everyone introduce themselves to each other randomly around the room. When they introduce themselves, they take a few jelly beans from their bag and put it in the other person's bag... without looking.

After time is up, have everyone look in their bags. Those who have red jelly beans are "infected" with aids. Explain that it was originally 1 out of 10 people that had AIDS/HIV... and now a lot of people have it.

That will give them an idea of how easily it can be spread if they aren't careful and how anyone could have it without knowing.

NOTE: If you're concerned with people peeking in the bag and figuring it out before the activity begins, you can get a variety pack and fill every bag with all the colors mixed... EXCEPT red. Then, take 1 out of 10 of those bags filled and put in some red as well. This will reduce suspicion of figuring out the activity, but will also lower the percentage of those who are "infected", but should still be noticeable. :thumb:
