they can be hearing OR d/Deaf actors/actresses

for example, for some reason, i think that bobby edner (most people know him for playing the brain in "spy kids 3d") would be phenomenal playing a d/Deaf person. he's hearing (in fact, he's in a boyband), but there's just something about him (he has a very expressive face) that makes me think he'd be good in such a role. he has a very extensive resume of being in dramatic roles.

Bobby Edner

(i may be biased, since bobby's been a HUGE celebrity crush for me for a looong time ;-P)

i'd love to know everyone else's thoughts/opinions :-D

Good topic. I saw the movie Voices last year in which Amy Irving plays a deaf character. I can't really think of anyone right now that would be good in a deaf/hoh role.

none.

I rather see REAL deaf actors and actresses.

Those fakes are stealing the jobs that deaf actors need. Why spend thousands on a acting school only to have hearing people pull the rug from under them and give it to a hearing person who plays a fake deaf?

The answer is money.

It's cheaper to hire hearing people to play deaf people, minus the cost of having to hire an interpreter to work along side them while doing their roles. Hearing people is easier to communicate with them and less frustrations for the directors.

You've bang on the head of the nail there!!
yep its pretty much the same as 'blackfacing' white actors
ever noticed the all- black cast tv shows dont really show black culture?, only the dominant white's value (think Prince of Bel-Air), like the upper-middle class blacks where we know its not true, rather blacks are more commonly found in the lower class, separated far from TV depictions. It doesnt represent the reality of the majority of blacks, in similarily d/Deaf actors would most likely represent the few 'highly successful' deaf individuals.
People confuse this with role models, there are not the same thing!, (beware the following will be confusing, so you are warned) also I'd dare to say 'role models' piss me off too, they aren't 'real deaf people' with 'real deaf experiences', only they are politically hand-picked to swoon the deaf community into buying the neo-liberal crap that 'lifestyle seminars' reeks of greed and pretentious feel-good lies.
So, my later point is, if they indeed use real deaf actors/actresses chances are they are the 'successful ones' and would tend to act for characters belonging to the 'deserviing upper-middle class social backgrounds.

You have raised a very sensitive topic.
A lot of deaf people would really prefer that deaf roles did not go to hearing actors. :(

Communists and hard-left socialists do the same crap in their films.

Big deal.

lol, yes thats true, its all in the same vain, its not what they claim to speak of, they are 'supposedly' to represent, myself believe you can't represent anything, but again comes a paradox how can you have no-one to speak an idea to which cement or share a common goal in social well being? very hard to shake this one off, much in same way we might loath how come cops treat people brutally and get away with it, while we cant go without cops, brutual cops should go with brutual criminals, but they dont seem to mix them together right. shrugs its a difficult one to reseolve.

I don't care what actors and actresses will do in a movie. I would love to watch them in an action! Wheneve they can speak and/or sign. ;)

It will be interesting!

uh-oh...i didn't realize how sensitive this subject is...sorry :-/

i don't know of many deaf actors/actresses (i know of marlee matlin, shoshannah stern, and ryan lane, but that's it), and i guess i just think that there are some hearing actors/actresses that can pull it off.

but that's just my opinion. i don't want to start world war 3 here :-/

i am mad with the hearing actor/actress they are so very selfish
