My youngest nephew, Daniel, has delayed speech for a 3 year old. My sister went to the IEP meeting on Tuesday morning for the fall. He is getting speech therapy 2 times a week during the summer and he will have speech 3 times a week in the fall. My school district is very good getting services for the children.

I will post information about all 4 nephews in this thread.

Great... My hearing daughter did speech once a weeks! :):)

Are your nephew's parents deaf?

My 19 month old son just got evaluated by a specialist from the public school today and it has been determined that he will recieve support services for speech development. He is delayed in speech even though my husband is hearing and he is with his hearing grandmother 40 hours a week. We will have home visits twice a month until he gets caught up. The specialists said that it was very good that he has been exposed to sign language due to me being deaf and that she tells hearing parents of hearing children to expose them to sign language cuz it helps with their language development. I was like wow!!! I felt flattered!

June 13 Update!

Bobby and Matthew told me before that they received their school yearbook on Monday. I did not sign the yearbooks yet. :(

July 1 Update

I cannot believe Matthew will be 7 years old on July 11. Kids grow up fast! :giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle:

Do they know why he has delayed speech? I would reccomend a really thorough evalution. It might just be a mild learning disabilty, but there are other things which could be responsible for the delay. I'd also suggest to your sister about maybe finding a specialized school or program, like Easter Seals or UCP, or maybe even an oral deaf program, and doing a dual placement so that if the public school placement isn't that great, he can get appropreate services. The trouble with public school sped is that it tendto be targeted mostly towards mild LD kids. Kids with more classic disabilites tend to not be served as well.

Deafdyke, Daniel's therapist thinks he has very low muscle tone.

Yeah, and being speech delayed is not the same as being language delayed. Just wanted to pointthat out before someone assumed that it was the same thing and used it to validate not exposing children to sign.

July 26 Update

Daniel is getting clearer with his speech. Yesterday, I was at my sister's house and Daniel was saying "Midnight", Matthew and Sarah very clearly.

August 25 Update

Daniel will be attending preschool at our church on Monday, Wednesday and Friday in the morning. He will have speech therapy on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday in the afternoon.

Bobby and Matthew will start school on Sept. 6 while my nephew Alex in New Orleans has already started school.

I hoe Daniel enjoys going to preschool. Sounds like he is making progress with his speech threrapy. Yep, back to school time for all the kiddies!

My sister will be happy when she has only Sarah at home. It will be nice time for mother and daughter bonding.

A Bobby Update!

My nephew, Bobby, is turning 10 on February 25! As his aunt/godmother, his birthday will be very emotional event for me.

great
my nephew will be 13 in end of jan he is growing up :( and in 3 more years he will be driving yikes ha. and my niece is 8 and also have speech problem herself but is getting speech therapy too i think at school but my sister hates to talk about my niece's speech problem and etc... that why i don't get much from her only from my mother i don't blame my sister how she feels.

Sue, Suggest to your nephew's parents, that they have the nephew who has speech delays, evaluated at something like Easter Seals or United Cerebral Palsy. Also, is the preschool setting one of those special needs preschools? I really think that even kids with relatively mild disabilties should be able to reap the benifits of the speicalized special ed programs out there. Suggest too that even if he doesn't qualify for a general developmental delay preschool, that they look into supplemental stuff for him. Kids with mild disablities tend to be really maxstreamed (mainstreamed with little or no exposure to the advantages that the disabilty world can offer)
