I was chatting with a friend who lives in PA and he mentioned that he had applied to MAWD (Medical Assistance for Workers with Disabilities). I looked around and it doesn't seem that being on SSI/SSDI is a requirement, just being considered disabled according to SSA's guidelines.
So, if you live in PA or know someone who does and has a disability, check this out.
It's so nice being able to have health coverage with a disability, because private insurance is hella expensive for people with disabilities and they should be able to keep their jobs, make as much as they can without losing medical care benefits.
For other states, there may be similar programs.
