360M Deaf/HOH People in the World?

There are up to 360 Million Deaf and Hard of Hearing people in the world, and in the United States they perceive there are in essence 28 Million here. We assume there are over three million completely deaf people in the U.S. and some statistics show that there are approximately 15 Million people with hearing losses requiring them to use Sign Language. There is an estimated collective number of 60 Million people in the U.S. who are connected with Sign Language.
 
Wow, go figure. That is what we need for special accommodations to help us understand hearing people like having ASL interpreters and notetakers whether in the classrooms or in public places like Doctors, Lawyers (courts), and many areas where we need help to understand them. That is a lot of people in the world. Many hearing people are not aware of how we Deaf or Hard of Hearing people have to struggle every day to understand hearing people. A BIG SIGH.
 
360m deaf ??? Never believe! By the way they had could to create a deaf conutry!
 
360M? and the hearing world still struggle to meet our needs......

Be careful...there are still some people that believe that those with "differences" should be segregated and excluded.

With such numbers, we need more "vocal" advocacy for ourselves. It's only through sheer numbers and self advocacy that the mobility impaired in the US got the ADA pushed through and have been active in enforcing the rights of the "differently-abled".

Maybe hearing people are the ones with the "differences". :giggle:

Ah, a d/Deaf with some clues on disability......hopefully you enrich yourself further on that thinking in relation with 'deafness as disability'..... and ironically deafness IS a disability, not because we can't hear but because the way we get treated. We might have some 'temporarily abledbodied with CIs' and/or with use of third party members for interaction with the hearing society's members.

True 'nuff.

According to WHO, our impairment is hearing loss, our "handicap" is our societal limitation imposed by the hearing majority making jobs, education, and telecommunications less accessible to us.
