Why are people treating me like the way they are?

Yes, they do. Even when I talk to them one-to-one, they would give correct responses to my question. What I've noticed is that they nod when they understand me. It's just that it seems no one wants to put in an effort to initiate a conversation with me. I always have to be the one no matter...

Why are people treating me like the way they are?

Hello strangers, long time no talk! I'm back in school after a long awesome summer. I am going to keep this post short and sweet. I'm in a nursing school so my class consists of 15 people unlike the size of lectures. I have a Cochlear Implant and a heavy thick accent as well. However I will...

Why do we have to turn off our CI during take-off and landing?

Oh that's strange. I can't really remember who told me but it was definitely one medical professional at my hospital.

Why do we have to turn off our CI during take-off and landing?

I'm really curious because before I left for a vacation (eons ago), I was told that I have to turn off my CI when the airplane departs and lands. Why? Also, what happens if you have an MRI with your Cochlear Implant? I'm really curious to know. Thanks for your answers!

Nervous of starting speech therapy after 6 years of hiatus?

You're right, if a speech language pathologist commented on my speech that it's good, I shouldn't worry about it. However, what I've noticed is that recently when I'm talking to people, they have a bit hard time understanding me. These SLPs mentioned that they did not understand some words...

Nervous of starting speech therapy after 6 years of hiatus?

Thank you for your encouragement. I'm really anxious but spending $300+ reminds me that I got to do it.

Nervous of starting speech therapy after 6 years of hiatus?

It's been 6 years since I last had speech therapy sessions. Now thank God I got a job so I'll be able to fund for private speech therapy (I'm above 18 so I'm no longer eligible for "free" speech therapy). I'm very nervous like God, I am doubting if speech therapy will be a success for me. Of...

How do you feel about being asked questions?

Actually I could say that but I discovered from Internet research and other people's experiences that people who have intellectual disabilities tend to have speech impediments. My speech is quite clear and have been told by many many many people that I have an accent, not a type of speech...

How do you feel about being asked questions?

I'm really curious. For me, I don't like being asked questions. I can understand that people asking questions is a good opportunity to educate them about hearing loss/deafness/HOH/etc but sometimes I would like to be left alone. One time, I was working at my job, and someone asked me, "may I...

Scared, lost and full of questions

Hi there, I was actually born deaf but I could at least help answer some of your questions. 1. Sometimes I do because as you know, you may not be able to hear everything in a group of people. Also, you have to put in efforts to "listen" which can be exhausting so you would rather just be left...

    Rude response = rude personality?

For these rude responses, have they given you "insight" into their personality at all?

    Rude response = rude personality?

    1) For those who rely on speaking as the primary method to communicate, have your received rude attempts from other people when you speak to them? It's hard for me to explain but I think you will get it. Haha, I have a nickname for this kind of facial expression for people who don't understand...

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

Oh yea, no one in my family has insurance....

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

Wow I feel discouraged. I mean it's all about financial need. I'm a nursing student here in Canada and the tuition fees are extremely expensive so there's no way that I can afford private speech therapy. Even in hospitals, we still have to pay for the sessions unless we are hospitalized due to...

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

I did have trouble saying "th" phoneme but eventually got it now. It took me full six months to get it right. What I would suggest is sticking the tip of your tongue between your teeth and blow air out. You may feel that the air is not coming out enough but keep practising and you will get it.

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

I have a question....although I was born deaf and received speech therapy from ages 7-13, how did you know that you pronounced the words correctly?

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

Laura, long time no talk! Thank you so much Laura. I really appreciate your kind words. I knew it, anything is possible. I don't practice as much as I should have but I have four years left until I finish nursing school so I will use this time wisely to improve my speech. Sure, if we have to be...

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

I didn't say I want to have a hearing voice. I want to have my speech to sound clear.

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

Yeah it's a speech defect or whatever you want to call it. It really depends. Sometimes my speech is really clear and people have no trouble understanding me. However there are some days that my speech becomes unclear. I had an assessment last year and found out that I have difficulty saying...

How often do you have speech therapy as an adult?

Whatdidyousay: well, many people said I have a heavy accent but it's pretty understandable. I'm an adult and I also had speech therapy twice a week when I was a child.
