Does any one one else have meniere's

I have it too. I think it started in late middle or early high school for me. I thought I was going crazy, because I kept having these weird... shifts in perception. Or that's how it felt. I've had some level of tinnitus 24/7 all my life so I didn't know that was what it was or that it was...

    Distortion in the FM program

I've definitely noticed a lot of distortion and an increase in squealing and such. *shudder* Hate that thing, but its better with than without for lecture halls and the more advanced my courses get the fewer of them are in the big halls where I really need it.

How long do your batteries last when using an FM system?

Haven't noticed a decrease in HA battery life... FM system's components have a really obnoxiously short battery life though!!

    College Student New Here

Hi Bri! I'm CJ. I too am a deaf (actually hoh in my case) from birth college student who doesn't really sign. My parents did their best to cover it up when I was a kid, so nobody ever taught me to sign and I just don't have time to take a class on it now on top of my college classes.

    Even Cat wears CI!

They're not interested in benefiting the cat. It's an experiment to measure the effect of CI on developing neuroanatomy and they're doing it on cats rather than people because the laws governing experiments on animals are less restrictive than those governing experiments on humans. (I'm studying...

    Cornell accepted me

There is a coed fraternity at Cornell that a lot of the vet students are in, called Alpha Zeta. Find some crappy little apartment for the meantime and rush AZ. I'd recommend rushing them even if it weren't for wanting pet-friendly housing. The brothers there were fantastic people as of a few...

Are deaf kids bullied/harrassed more frequently than hearing kids in mainstream?

I wasn't bullied for being hoh, because my classmates didn't know it, but the social isolation resulting from difficulty keeping up in social situations made me a very easy target. There were a lot of threats and insults and rumors and physical intimidation. It sucked. I wanted to drop out in...

    FM advantages

I had to give in and borrow one from the school for my classes starting last fall. I always sit in the front center anyway, but in most of the lecture halls that's not good enough. It drives me crazy with the wearer constantly bumping it and interference from electronics, but it makes the...

    Making involuntary noises

I know I do it. Back when my parents were still denying that anything was the matter and I was struggling through music lessons, my teacher was always getting on my case for "making a grunting noise between notes". I still have no idea what she was talking about, but I believe her that I did it...

Are deaf kids bullied/harrassed more frequently than hearing kids in mainstream?

My classmates and teachers didn't even know I was HOH, and I didn't have HA back then because my parents didn't want me to seem different. I definitely got bullied more though, because I didn't pick up social skills as well as the other kids and so I didn't have the protection of being in a...

Accused of Using HOH-ness for Revenge?? WTF?

I have a very rocky relationship with my fraternity. I get along great with other chapters and most of the alumni of my chapter, but went inactive from the undergraduate chapter last semester because of a combination of reasons. There are a number of undergraduate and recent graduate brothers...

Colored Hearing aids and EARMOLDS? AGE

Mine are "espresso" colored and not very visible. I want colors, because hey, I'm proud to be me whoever and whatever "me" may be, but was a bit rushed to pick a color and pointed at the first attractive color I saw on the sheet of choices. It's a pretty color, but I'd still love something a...

Awsome and positive hearing people stories

Last night I was at an alumni reunion for my fraternity. One of the alumni from the very first pledge class 30 years ago when our chapter was first founded came up to me and asked me about how things were going with getting the school/professors to comply with my accommodations as he had noticed...

    Annoying ignorant hearing people stories

When I mention to whoever I'm with needing to find a ride to/needing to schedule/going to be late to event x because of an audi appointment, somebody who happens to be in the room overhearing invariably asks "oh, so you're getting the implant?" The people asking think it's a cure (I've quizzed a...

Learning to read as a deaf/hoh person

To be fair, they were not told that I was HOH. My parents did their best to cover it up and didn't tell the school, and I was one of those obnoxiously smart kids who really didn't need to pay attention in class to learn the material because I could absorb it from seeing it in a book or on a...

HOW TO: Use Deafness to Your Advantage

This past weekend I was at a fraternity party that was actually a huge water fight, so of course I was not wearing my HA. Ended up on guard duty to keep non-brothers from going upstairs, and we discovered that I made a really good guard because guests who wouldn't take no for an answer could...

Learning to read as a deaf/hoh person

That wasn't an isolated incident. There are a lot similarly burnt into my memory of teachers making the assumption that I had the same information as my classmates and that my failure to do what I was supposed to was willful misbehavior. Got held after school in 1st grade for allegedly...

Learning to read as a deaf/hoh person

I really don't remember how I learned, but I remember it being traumatic. It's one of my earliest memories of authority figures causing me to feel fear and betrayal and knowing that something was wrong but not what because nobody bothered to tell me that I was supposed to hear better than I did...

    New Neighbors

That's the problem. I don't know what loud is by hearing person standards. I don't play my music at a volume that sounds loud to me, but I don't know at what point they consider it loud.

    New Neighbors

I'm moving into a new apartment in a week. It'll be the first time I've lived neither with my parents nor in a dorm. The lease talks about quiet hours and keeping things at a "respectful volume", and I'm a little concerned. I don't think my music is loud, but I can't/shouldn't make assumptions...
