Woman got hit by a watermelon that she misfired with a catapult.

I saw this on either The Soup or Tosh.0. I almost died laughing!

    TVGuardian

Seriously! It wasn't until many years later when I finally understood why it thought 'Woody' was a "bad" word.

    TVGuardian

I remember watching Disney movies as a kid at my friend's house. They had the TVGuardian and when we were that young, we didn't understand why in Toy Story, it would always change Woody's name to Tommy.

Do any of you get the "you talk too fast" complaint?

I've always been told I talk too fast and mumble, but I never really associated it with being hard of hearing, actually. It makes perfect sense though and I'm having a "duh!" moment. :D

    polite address

A person can be influenced by their culture, yes. Defined by it, no. Generalizations such as the ones Berry made are just ridiculous. When I welcome someone to my home, I'm not plotting their demise. However, you will meet hearing people AND Deaf people like that. Not everything comes down to...

    polite address

How on earth can a character trait be "built into" a spoken language? Once again, that goes beyond language and beyond Deaf/hearing. That completely depends on the person and their individual character. The core of politeness is hypocrisy? Are you serious?? Now I just feel bad for you. I...

    polite address

Sorry, I should have been more clear. That's what I meant - that facial expressions say what the hands can't. My bad. :) And it doesn't matter whether he/she is Deaf or hearing. My statements still stand.

    polite address

Wow, nice generalization. Not only is your implication that all hearing people are backstabbing, selfish, sons of bitches untrue, but there are plenty of people who ARE that way - Deaf and hearing alike. Being Deaf doesn't make someone charitable and kind and being hearing doesn't make you a...

    New Signers' Funny Mistakes

No prob. :) Hope it makes sense. I'm not very good at describing visual things.

    New Signers' Funny Mistakes

The first picture is the sign 'year' like you would normally sign it. The second picture is just like I described it - "she put one fist on top of the other, and moved them together in a giant circle."

    New Signers' Funny Mistakes

I work at a classical school and this summer, we hired an ASL teacher (I couldn't take the position because of my school schedule.) In preparation for the Christmas program, she got the pre-K and kindergarten classes together and they were going to sign some weird holiday song called "When Love...

    Your sign name?....

My sign name is an 'A' with the thumb brushing the right corner of the mouth. The friend that gave it to me said I smile a lot.

    Phantom Sounds .. Audio Halucinations?

About five years ago, before I lost some of my hearing, my mom had her cell phone set to play a certain ringtone, and she had it set on that particular tone for about three years straight. Now, I swear I hear her phone ringing. It's amusing, but my roomate thinks I'm nuts. :giggle:

    Colour of hearing aids

I guess I'm just too picky. Several things sound so tinny and hollow and it feels like they compromised the performance and instead chose to make it as aesthetically-pleasing as possible. Overall, I shouldn't be complaining, because they've been a blessing. I would recommend them, especially...

    Colour of hearing aids

Oticon... I hate them. The color is pretty bomb, though. I've heard good things about Phonaks... I may give them a try. And the pure translucent is definitely a plus :D

    Colour of hearing aids

Right now, mine are white with orange hibiscus flowers. I'm looking to get rid of these and would love some translucent purple ones next. Although, if they make some completely clear ones so you can see inside, that would be pretty awesone.

    I am so mad!

From my experience, it's kind of hit and miss as to whether or not CC is available. Sometimes under Subtitles it says 'English for the Hearing-Impaired' (which chaps my ass, but that's another story for another time :D) or sometimes the DVD won't have them but the TV will, or sometimes the TV...

Terping on words that you're stumped with.

The interpreter at my church will fingerspell if she doesn't know a word, or if she is unsure of the sign, she will sign it, fingerspell it, and ask me if it's right. On long words ('Revelation,' 'propitiation,' etc,) she will fingerspell it and then designate it an abbreviation for the purpose...

    Digital Hearing Aids

I have digital aids and I can't stand them. They are so uncomfortable and the speech quality leaves something to be desired.

Goofs and gaffes by newly deaf?

I've boiled water until it all evaporated, too. I always forget about what I'm cooking. After I lost most of my hearing, I went an entire weekend before I realized that no one had forgotten me, I had just left my phone ringer on Normal and had 17 text messages. If you can't hear the...
