Bimodal-Bilingual students find no lag in dominant language

The study is specifically addressing and testing the belief that sign will slow use of English. These are Gallaudet VL2 associated researchers, so I'd have thought they'd have access to deaf bimodally-bilingual students for this study.

Bimodal-Bilingual students find no lag in dominant language

If I'm reading this right, it looks likes this study shows that taking a bilingual bimodal route, despite splitting language use between 2 languages, does NOT slow down English use (although it does slow down ASL). I'm waiting for the full article to be available, but I'm wondering why they...

    success/failure stats?

I contacted my hospital to get both my surgeon's and the hospital's success / failure rates for CI surgeries. They should be able to provide that to you. If you want ww #s, the CI companies themselves are required to provide their product-specific reliability rates ( Nucleus Reliability |...

    success/failure stats?

Hi jbeer! Are you looking for data/stats on medical success rates (implant surgery, revision surgery), or technology/device longevity, post-CI audiograms showing access to speech sounds, or something qualitative like satisfaction rates, %recipients who found improvement in word comprehension...

    Deciding on Brand

All 3 offer excellent, cutting edge products, you can't go wrong with any decision you make. After familiarizing yourself with all of the features and stats for each of the 3 products, I'd recommending discussing the options with your surgeon and your CI audiologist. They can be loathe to...

CouchSurfing through a Silent World: Meeting the International Deaf Community

Sure, I understood her video and the quote in my OP, I'm asking about your comment. What was it you tried and found hard to explain to her, opened her eyes to a few months ago?

CouchSurfing through a Silent World: Meeting the International Deaf Community

    First Language ASL and English?

My daughter started using ASL about a year before she began learning English, but for the most part she's been acquiring both simultaneously. She was taught ASL and placed in an immersive ASL-focused learning environment, she picked up English organically outside of her structured classroom...

Hearing mom with deaf toddler, AB Canada

I wasn't making that point, although I'd agree with you that seems likely. I was only asserting that my experience differs from DD's: although she says VO students are rare, even at deaf schools, I have seen that at TLC a vast majority of the students primarily use ASL, and haven't found...

Hearing mom with deaf toddler, AB Canada

I'm familiar with deaf schools, not as much with deaf kids in the mainstream, so I deferred to deaf dyke and her assertion that it is rare in a regular classroom.

Hearing mom with deaf toddler, AB Canada

I see many sign-only kids, sometimes Deaf of Deaf, but not always. Some wear aids, some don't. But they do have a full language in sign, so there's not an effort to develop a spoken language when sound is not accessible to them. But then maybe that's because I'm involved with a bi-bi school...

    Parents of deaf children?

Early intervention can usually provide you with a list of local playgroups including families with deaf kids, whether they run them or not. Ours pointed us to a school for the deaf that held 3X weekly parent-infant group meetings in ASL with terps, providing us with language development and...

Hearing mom with deaf toddler, AB Canada

Unfortunately, my daughter wasn't tested at birth or any time before her 1st birthday, so she spent a year in an orphanage in which no one had a clue she was profoundly deaf, and so no one used any language accessible to her during such an important year. In an ideal situation, getting results...

    Concerned mom looking for support...

:laugh2: I wouldn't worry about an accent. As others have said, I'd focus on developing fluency in a language or languages enabling her to communicate effectively with those around her. Fluency doesn't equal accuracy, esp. at 3YO, so don't worry about mispronunciations or wonky handshapes...

    Concerned mom looking for support...

We started early intervention at 1YO, even before having a conclusive diagnosis of profound deafness, because my daughter was coming from an institutional environment in China and we knew there'd be a delay in acquiring language. By good fortune, our assigned SLP was competent in ASL, and...

Is it really so bad to know SEE (Sign Exact English?)

So, you already had acquired spoken English (or whatever your first language is, I think I remember that you are multilingual) by the time you began learning to read and write? Or were you without language at all before learning to read/write? (I'm assuming the first, but want to check, just...
