If there were a cure for hearing loss would you take it

I should clarify that I have very strong BTE HA's so I do pick up limited environmental sounds, pick up minimal conversation but very very difficult to understand much. 'Normal hearing' would be mind-boggling I'm sure, especially at the beginning.

If there were a cure for hearing loss would you take it

Profoundly deaf from birth so I am happy and used to my life as it is. Fluent in ASL and have friends and family, and others in Deaf community, I can communicate with; having said that, however, I would LOVE to hear music, the sounds of nature, and human voices-- my childrens --conversing. It...

    Why are you deaf?

Born profoundly Deaf, rubella related. The more I read about adjustments to being late deafened, or hoh, the frustrations that people go through, etc., the more blessed I feel to have been born without hearing. I think it would be awful to be part of the hearing world and then lose that.

    Partners

I was born Deaf; boyfriend of 20 years is hearing. It takes work--but then, I think all relationships do, maybe ours just more so. We met through living in the same condo complex years ago.

Is life harder for the deaf?

To the OP's original question, of course there are challenges that would not exist for those with hearing. But my experience (born profoundly deaf) has been that there is a way around most challenges-- it however requires learning patience, being creative and innovative and definitely learning...

What does deaf mean to you

It's my world, and basically the only world I've known--never had hearing. It's my comfort zone.

A Deaf person in large hearing event

It sounds like you're having mixed results with your efforts to immerse yourself in the hearing world--my experience as well (although I've not made the effort you have)--I'm a senior and I miss the days when deaf events were more plentiful. :(. As a person who prefers signing as my method of...

    Frank Gifford dies

I remember him as well but more because I used to see him as a commentator on sports shows.

    Proper Introduction

Hi all. I did have a prior post on here but have not officially introduced myself. I am female, from Canada, and a senior (62). Born profoundly deaf into a hearing family (two older siblings), although I did grow up with a deaf older cousin. I have BTE HAs. They provide me some sound...

New to this forum but not to hearing loss. Questions about new technology

Exactly! The worst--or maybe the funniest--is watching a breaking story on a news channel like CNN and someone in real time is furtively typing the captioning in a back room somewhere; you get the gist of what's happening but the crawl across the screen is a joke most times.

New to this forum but not to hearing loss. Questions about new technology

I should add, as far as the social aspect, (and this is totally off-topic from my original post and probably belongs in its own thread) that I have been in a relationship for several years with a hearing man. This comes with its own set of challenges. Our relationship is good but takes a lot...

New to this forum but not to hearing loss. Questions about new technology

Well, I think for social activities it depends on the size of the city you live in as well. My city is mid-size but if I lived in a larger city the opportunities would probably be more plentiful.

New to this forum but not to hearing loss. Questions about new technology

Gemini, that's your choice and if you feel that has enriched your life it's not really up to me or anyone to discredit your decision. For me, personally, it was not an option--fear of change, adapting to new ways, age certainly, together with a combination of just being comfortable with the...

New to this forum but not to hearing loss. Questions about new technology

Thank you for your input everyone. I was just curious . Being older and "old-school" I am not up-to-date with all the new technology but of course appreciate everything the Internet offers, texting, CC....pretty basic stuff really can be a huge help!! Things have come a long way since I was...
