    Struggling with ASL

Thanks for the suggestions. I did take a short class with adults of other deaf children but I was really behind. I can't seem to get my hands to move as fast. LOL. I'll keep at it. I'm taking an online class now.

    Struggling with ASL

I'm the father of a soon to be 4 year old who is completely deaf and goes to a school for the deaf. I've learned the basics but it comes so slowly to me. I have an ap on my phone etc. It's just coming so slowly to me and I feel I need to step it up before he gets any older. Any suggestions...

    ASL games for child

My little guy is 2 and seems to know a lot of signs. He doens't always get them right but we can generally figure it out. He's also made up some signs himself which I think is interesting. I too would be interested in some games but he might be a little young still.

    They call themselves parents?!

I don't think I'll ever understand that culture.

    Parents of deaf children?

Looking for support groups or other parents with deaf children. My son is 2, the youngest of 4 children and he was born deaf. Just looking for others in similar situations.

    When CI won't work.

My little guy is just over 2 years old and while he's a candidate for implants, his mother and I are very cautious about going forward with the process. Some people have been shocked to hear this but we've been told that CI's might not be that effective because of his underdeveloped cochlea...

Trying to understand what it's like for my son

Perhaps you didn't read the whole thread but where are we not accepting him as a deaf child? We're learning ASL, teaching him ASL, and making sure he gets therapy for these things each week. We're looking into both Maryland School for the Deaf as well as options for mainstreaming him. We're...

Trying to understand what it's like for my son

Lucas - I can't thank you enough for taking time to share your story with myself and of course others. I'm 42 and honestly felt like I could handle anything. Then when Jagger was born everything came crashing down. He has some other health issues but we're working through them. His...

Trying to understand what it's like for my son

As far as loss, he's completely 100% deaf. He hears nothing. We've been through a battery of tests at John's Hopkins and the results have all been the same. The CT scan he recieved shows his cochlea are not completely formed. In fact, his entire inner ear anatomy is malformed. He has an MRI...

Trying to understand what it's like for my son

Gotcha. We're doing ASL now actually. He has a therapist that comes to the house once a week and we're using ASL in our home. He has 3 hearing siblings who are also learning. Like I said in a previous post, my wife is better at it than I am. I know the words they just don't come second...

Trying to understand what it's like for my son

Thanks for the response. OF course we won't force anything on him to do anything he does't want to. Sometimes it's difficult at this particular age not knowing what he may want etc. Of course it's eventually up to him but until he can make those decisions, aren't we obligated to try and...

Parent of a deaf child (13 months old)

Yes, my son gets therapy nearly every week and we have been in touch with the school, just not visited yet. I think we were waiting to see if he ends up getting inplants. If he does, he may end up going to the elementary school his siblings went to. We live out in the country and that would...

Trying to understand what it's like for my son

My son Jagger is only 13 months old so we haven't been at this for very long. One of my biggest challenges is trying to get past what it's like for him. He's always so happy and energetic. When will he be aware of sound? When does a deaf person understand there is such a thing as sound? I'm...

Parent of a deaf child (13 months old)

Thanks. =) It's taking me longer to learn than my wife but I'm getting there. We think he's starting to use certain signs. It's actually pretty exciting. --Brian

Parent of a deaf child (13 months old)

Not sure where to start really... I haven't reached out to any community yet regarding my son's condition. He was born deaf with malformed cochlea. He's got some other minor issues that genetics and the like are still looking into. He's been receiving sign language therapy for several months...
