Yeah I think that may be true... my 7-year-old hearing sister watches TV with CCs with me and when she's bored, reads them all out loud before the characters on TV can say it, and tries to beat them. I won't tell her to stop, she's reading! =P

That has occured to my little sister too.... CC's is a good thing for little kiddies to practice reading stuff, which they can improve their reading ability. ;)
 
I know the feeling.

I've had to deal with that several times in the past when I'm in class and we're watching videos.

At my college, there's a big deaf community and they emphasize a lot on accommodations. So, no one really complains about the captioning or subtitles.

However, it was a minor problem in my high school. There would be at least 1 or 2 students (usually troublemakers) who would complain about the subtitles or captioning.

My response to those whiners? Too bad. I don't see what's so distracting about subtitles or captioning? In fact, it actually improves reading speed and some hearing people can actually catch more things from reading than from simply listening. ;)

Finally, someone who get it! It's just show how spoiled they are, wanting everything their way whether other person have to suffer for it or not.

I tend to notice when they're off! I hate having to pay attention to the audio. lol

My wife used to complain when I put them on (which I thoguht amusing cos she put the telly's volume up to 35!!) during doctor who but she's shut up about it. perhaps she's finally accepting that they help me (and it's better than asking what they just said).

My family always complained when I put the CC's on at home. I didn't need them as much then as I do now so I yielded, turned the telly up and coped.
 
Hot damn, those classmates of yours have some serious lack of respect for others, especially with disabilities. I sincerely hope they will get something not so grateful in return.

All we deaf people want to have some respect.

If it's in the movie and not during the end credits, then it is a woman, and not Elton John.

Or sometimes the captioning will have an entirely different song in them then what is playing on the actual show (usually in TV when they didn't get the rights to play the song in the show and had to change it but didn't change the CC).

Or when they'll bleep out things in movies on tv but the CC still has the cuss words. lol.

I just hate it when the CC is all broken up and they seem to be doing a REALLY crappy job with it.

I'm pretty sure in original version it's a woman. I can't hear but I am a huge Lion King fan. It got to be woman since that song won awards for being best song and I recall that it was a woman.

Anyhow, that movie got a few errors with closed captioning and SDH which annoys me a lot especially since it was a DVD not regular videotape. They got 10 years to perfect the sentences yet they still make mistakes. I am sick of seeing stuff like that.
 
holy crapola you're right! dang that woman is alto! I feel embarrassed for not knowing this since I'm a HUGE disney geek!
 
I don't knkow why hearing people have such a problem with captions. I'm hearing and I LOVE captions! Sometimes people mumble or someone I'm watching TV with starts talking or some other distraction. Plus, it's much easier to remember a good quote if I read it as opposed to just hearing it.
 
i love it when hearing people use captions! and not just in places like noisy restaurants, either. I remember having a mild loss as a kid and screeeaming at my family for talking too loudly in the room next door when I'm trying to watch TV, if only i'd known captions even EXISTED...

Captions has existed for a long time ;)
 
kimpossible, maybe you can ask for a 2nd TV set with cc on and the other one off for those who are deaf-impaired.
 
I've run into the same problems with subtitles and closed captions, Kim. As lots have said here, the complaints and nonverbals (funny how eye-rolls and such are really "closed captions" in themselves) are from the profoundly immature and self-centered.

At the complex where I live, there are only two deafies (though I have found that many are secretly hard of hearing). Some people constantly complained of closed captions on the common TV and in the exercise room. One person hid the remote so it couldn't be turned on, but it backfired. Many hearing people complained, and the majority voted to have closed captions on permanently, so management paid to have closed captions on all the time.

I felt bad that all had to view closed captions until I was amazed to learn the number of hearing people who want them after experiencing them for a while.

Education is he answeer, and in public places, the people in charge bear the responsibilty to educate those who are too self-centered to accommodate. Ha ha ha, I really like the lesson of turning the sound off so the hearing can experience a little of our frustration.
