This is one of my pet peeves.

I'm not a vegetarian but sometimes I enjoy eating vegetarian meals. When I'm in the mood for a quick one-serving vegetarian meal, I search that area of the grocery store. Well, the vegetarian packages all include "meats"--that is, fake chicken, fake beef, fake burgers, fake seafood, etc.

If I want meat, I'll eat real meat. When I want vegetarian, I don't want fake meat mixed in it.

Here's my question to real vegetarians: Do you enjoy eating fake meat?

I can understand a person who eats vegetarian for health reasons maybe wanting the taste of "meat" with the meal.

But it just seems ironic to me that a person who is philosophically vegetarian could enjoy eating fake meat.

It's kind of like a person who is strongly against killing animals for fur wearing fake fur. What's the point?

I agree with you.

I think the philosophy behind being a vegetarian is bullshit.

If they want a vege-burger, then they're obviously thinking "burger"... which is MEAT!

I have a few friends who are vegetarians. Yet, they talk about eating vege-burgers, vege-chicken, etc. Some of them say it's because they were raised that way. Some of them say it's cuz they are against the slaughtering of animals.

If you're really against the slaughtering of animals, you shouldn't associate yourself with any kind of burgers... period.

Um... I don't know of a single vegetarian who went veg because they didn't like the taste of meat. We do it because we have morals and ethics and we don't want to condone the animal cruelty. If we can have our cake and eat it too (or meat, in this instance) why wouldn't anyone in their right mind choose a cruelty-free path?

It's selfish to eat meat because your taste buds are more important than animal cruelty.

Reba: I don't know what you're referring to. There are tons more vegetarian meals that don't have a meat substitute in them than those that do. Ethnic foods especially.

That is ridiculous. Soy and vegetables are soy and vegetables. If i'm against slaughtering animals, what the fuck does that have to do with soy? You can't be that ignorant, can you?

This is by far one of the most close-minded forums I have ever come to. I don't know why I stayed so long, and i'm always quickly reminded of why I leave. Peace.

Well, as being vegetarian myself, I found the "fake" burger, hot dogs, etc are very offense to me because they remind me of meats! I don't eat those because those are meat. I call them the meat period, no matter what are inside or what made from, they are "MEAT".

But they are good for some way, like if a person really want to be vegetarian, but love the meat so much, then the fake meats helps.

But for me, NO THANK YOU. It is too offense to me.

That makes sense to me. :)

That's what I don't get. If you don't like the idea of animals being killed for food, why would you want to eat something that reminds you of the dead animals? I think it would gross you out. Especially since the food product is labeled soy "chicken" or vegi "sausage".

I didn't mean that they all do. But many do. I was just wondering if they were accepted by philosophical/ethical vegetarians.

*nodding agreement* good thread here...

I really never thought about this until this thread here... Yes, it make good sense that why they put "chicken" or whatever......

I have been tried Vegetarian "meat" at Healthy shop where I buy cream without animal testing and saw coincidence that they offer us to test "meat"... I tried and don't like it much.

I bought fake burger for lunch, it's called soy burger or something like that and tried it then taste is soooo horrible and throw in trash then found other food for lunch. :barf:

I hate fake meat foods, it seems from fillers with chemicals.

Aren't most vegetarian meats made from soy or protein-like foods? Personally, I think they should use something other than "vegetarian chicken" or whatever.. I was at the store today.. and looked at the various "veggie" items.. most do have meat names like "soy chicken" or whatever.. and they also had "veggie cheese" which made me go "What in the world?"

I love veggie burger. Now, that is all veg in it, not meat. But using the word fake meat, I wouldn't look at it that way. Its all veg.

So it's not a "burger". :) Maybe it could be called a veggie patty or disc.

Ahhhh, Reba, a disc; all the farther I can throw it! Lol!

I refuse to eat fake meat, that's meat then fuck them.

I'm opposed to the conditions in which slaughtered animals often spend their lives. That's why I'm a vegan. I'm pretty damn sure my soybean based burger didn't spend it's life miserable in a slaughterhouse, so that argument downright sucks. You're making the vast assumption that all vegetarians cannot even stand the word "meat". That's just not true. A soybean is not meat, even if you call it "soy bacon". Gluten-based burgers will never be beef. Vegetables called chicken will never be chicken. Soy "milk" didn't come from a nursing animal.

Exactly. And this explain why the fake meats are offense to me..

Pacman

Really! You don't know the difference if you eat a Tofu turkey. It is very close to a real meat. You will be surprised about that. It is not really Tofu... Good Luck!

You can buy one at Stop & Shop, or Shaw, or Whole Food grocery.

I won't buy any food at a very small health food store because it is always expensive.

Actually, Trader's Joe is cheaper than the Whole Food.
