Could it Be Deaf people are smarter

So true! Ever hear the phrase "educated idiot"? Education level often provides people with a false sense of security--they get that degree, and decide they can stop thinking.
That's true.

I know a guy who graduated with an AAS (or AOS) degree 2 years ago and then just sat around doing nothing. He never got his diploma, but he never bothered to ask anyone (or the school) why his diploma never arrived. All he did was stay at home, drink beer, smoke cigarettes, smoke weed, and watch DVDs all day. A year later, his college contacted him and asked why he hadn't returned since he had a few classes left. If he had bothered to ask around why his diploma didn't arrive, that answer would have been revealed and he could have finished his classes a long time ago. Well, he finally finished 100% and got his diploma. Yet, he still sits around drinking beer, smoking cigarettes, smoking weed, and watching DVDs all day.

When I asked him why he didn't get a job, he said... "I'm an actor, I don't need those stupid jobs. I guess that would explain why the only job he ever had was 2 weeks at McDonalds.

How does he get $$ for his drugs ?

Education is good if you know how to use it .

Tsk tsk. Actors don't sit around and do nothing. They go out and do plays, movies, etc.

At least a lot of deaf people isn't like that. Thank God!

He used to be involved in plays at college. He believes that he will become a famous movie or television star.

Not really. Most actors have to work for their degree.

Look at Clint Eastwood. He finished high school and college. Now look at him. He's enjoying retirement as a successful director.

Ahhh...isn't he deaf too? (Clint Eastwood) ;)

Let's get back to what this thread is concerned with-- :)

Ok let's use Marlee Martin as a better example. I don't know if she graduated from college.

Sorry, RR. I thought we were discussing actors in general.

Actually, we're talking about deaf people being smarter.

It's like I said in another thread, it's also because of ignorance in many ways.

Right and like I said before, ignorance is an epidemic disease that can be cured by simply ignoring that deaf person if said person is acting up.

2 quotes comes to mind about what I've learned about the human behavior;

Common sense isn't quite so common.

Fools think they're wise, but the wise knows they are fools.

Interesting observation, andycane! LOL Socrates or Plato said something about someone being wise from admitting to not knowing stuff.

It is indeed arrogant to think we are better or smarter than others. Isn't that why we are mad at some hearing people in the first place? I think also deaf people are a hidden statistic that gets little attention.

True and some hearing people think "dumb" when they hear the word, "Deaf."

I don't see why this debate continues... no one group is smarter than another. They may be in theory, but all humans are humans and as long as the brain is in normal working condition we all have the same potential, the problem is how much we limit ourselves (circumstance has alot to do with that) depending on how we are raised, the things we are told, our own attitude, etc...

Actually, the brain can be in fine functioning condition, but there are still variances in abilites. That has nothing to do with being able to hear or not hear. People are simply born with different potential intelligence levels. A person with an IQ of 100, and a person with an IQ of 130 certainly do not posess the same potential intellectually, even though each individual brain is without pathology and functioning at an optimal level. However, these variances are much more within group that between group.

Right also someone who suffers from a physical disability like CP or HC may not have full control over their brain despite how high its IQ is.

:gpost:

I guess people like to continue to beat a dead horse...

Why look at that as a verification of Deaf can be smart? I look at it as discriminating producers of those TV shows feel deaf people on their respective shows would not equal big ratings. Seems real simple to me. Deaf need to stop trying to find "proof" that they are smart. Anyone that thinks about people in a fair way knows there are smart and stupid people in all walks.
Could it be in some ways deaf people are smarter than hearing people? Think about it. One never sees deaf people on Judge Judy, Dr. Phil, Maury Povich, Cops ( never a deaf criminal), on any of these reality shows such as Nanny 911 or Super Nanny.

Ohhh I guess I better stop trying to prove how smart I am. :giggle:

I agree with u about there are smart and stupid people in all walks. We are debating a dead issue for the fun of it, huh?

I would have to agree with Interpretrator and sr171soars.

Education is not an indicator of intelligence, in fact I've found many highly educated people become closed-minded and- in turn- stuck in their own beliefs, sticking their noses in the air, unable to admit a fallacy in their own thinking.

[edit] Oh, and in the off chance that anybody cares... TV is 50% crap, 40% advertisements, and 10% useless unbeneficial knowledge these days. I stopped watching it a long time ago. I can get the news from a newspaper, reading is good for you anyway.

QFT! I know many educated people who are be rather narrow minded and lack critical thinking skills and they aren't deaf either.
