What did you learn today? Part II

I used autosomal test, it do broader range of your dna, which helps identify matches throughout your entire family tree, along both your paternal and maternal sides.
I not sure what my kind DNA test my sister was going to use but at least they were honest with her and said their test worked best with men instead of just taking her money.

I learned that the boss of our neighbor was killed in a terrible wreck this morning. :(

The vehicle that caused the wreck was a stolen truck, and it hit three cars. The boss was in one of the cars.

These are the same neighbors whose relative, Walter Scott, was shot and killed by a policeman in North Charleston last year.

Ouch, I'm very sorry that boss of your neighbor was killed in car wreck. :(

I learned that it might be weeks before our yard debris from Hurricane Matthew gets picked up. Since our state was declared a disaster area, the normal weekly debris pick up by the city has been cancelled and FEMA has taken over. This is ridiculous.

Oh really, is it bad when state declared your area as disaster and FEMA takeover? If your area isn't damaged or destroyed so that's not any sense for state and federal to do it.

HUH? What does the normal weekly debris have to do with the hurricane debris ? So what are people to do with all their household trash especially if they don't a
garbage disposal ??

Debris and household trash are different things

Correct, in here, the debris pick-up is only done on request, apart from regular trash cans, but it may become routine after disaster.

My sympathies to your neighbor Reba :(... have been hearing of car accidents in SC lately. My niece was involved in one about 3 weeks ago (made the news even)...she was fine except for a sore leg. Found out 3 weeks later...that she has a broken fibula! Was originally a hairline fracture and soft tissue injury then...became a break. Wearing a big immobilizer boot now.
Thank you.

Ouch! Those bone breaks can be sneaky. Sadly, when they are hidden like that they take longer to heal. I hope your niece has a good healing from the break.

And dang... I hope it does get cleared up soon what with all the Hurricane Matthew damage...
I hope so, too.

I learned that main water pipe broke so I got boil water advisory. I have to boil water for my dog to drink. I drink Mountain Dew for now. I usually drink water from sink with Crystal Light powder. Did anyone ever get boil water advisory?
I haven't gotten one myself but people in our area have gotten them before. It must be really annoying to do all that boiling. I hope that you don't need to do it for too many days, and maybe you can get some bottled water to make life simpler.

The way it works here is that we normally have weekly (every Tuesday) pick up of lawn debris, and weekly (every Thursday) pick up of trash and recycling. We just set it out at the curb and it gets picked up.

Our trash pick up is now back on regular schedule (big relief). It's just the lawn debris now that is not getting picked up, thanks to FEMA rules. All my neighbors and I have a Great Wall of China of branches, leaves, etc., at the front of our homes. We're not supposed to let the piles spread into the street but some of my neighbors (actually, most of them) have put their debris on the streets. This makes driving more hazardous because the driving area is narrowed and visibility is more difficult. We're concerned that this stuff needs to be cleared before Halloween for the safety of kids walking in the neighborhood and the poor visibility.

Thank you.

I'm afraid the story is even worse. :(

"UPDATE- Authorities have identified the man who was killed during the crash as 45-year-old William Alexander Sigman.

He was travelling East on Dorchester Road at the intersection of 17-A when a vehicle hit his wife’s pickup truck on the driver rear side.

Sigman was driving behind her and was hit head on, as was a vehicle behind him.

He was pronounced dead on the scene at 5:30 this morning caused by massive head and body trauma."

That means his wife saw the accident and saw him die.

Well, it's the federal government. It's not expected to make sense.

When FEMA takes charge, they really take charge and no one can argue with them.

Interesting, in here, we have to call city office to make request so it will be effective in next week after request filled, but for after heavy storm and tornado, they will announce on local news and radio, so I know it is inconvenient :( but in city of Birmingham, there is weekly debris pick-up.

Oh wow, I hopefully your street will be cleaned as soon as possible, do your neighborhood has a lot of kids? In our neighborhood, most kids are grown-up nowadays but it used to be a lot of kids when we moved in 2005.

Thank you.

I hopefully that disaster is lifted as soon as possible and have you talked to media outlet about federal mismanagement in your area? Also tell them that you want all debris picked up.

How long time that your area used to be under FEMA control? They should reserved to area that is flooding, major damaged and destroyed, not minor damage or mess.

Not a bunch of kids but a pretty good number at various ages. Our neighborhood is popular for trick-or-treaters, including some who come from other neighborhoods. I usually prepare for about 100 on Halloween.

Oh I see, my parents bought mega pack of Hershey's candies for 2014 Halloween so only 2/3 left after Halloween over, but back in 2006, it was less than 1/4 left.

I don't know how long. Maybe a few more weeks.

It's not worth the time and energy to fight with FEMA. We went thru this with Hurricane Hugo in 1989, and FEMA hasn't improved since then.

After Hugo:

Senator Ernest Hollings (D-SC) bluntly describes FEMA’s hierarchy as a “bunch of bureaucratic jackasses” that should just “get the hell out of the way.” Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley Jr. criticizes FEMA for not bringing enough people or resources to his city. The relief system established by FEMA, he says, “is not designed to cope immediately and urgently with a major disaster.” Robert Hoffman, the mayor of St. Stephen in Berkeley County, says: “I really had more faith in our government.… We’re in serious trouble if FEMA is going to be the [lead] organization in the event of a nuclear war.” Unbeknownst to most of the public and government, the majority of the disaster agency is preoccupied with developing plans for a nuclear doomsday as part of the highly classified Continuity of Government program (see April 1, 1979-Present)

And remember Katrina in New Orleans?

How sad about wife seeing her husband died . :(

We have our household trash picked up weekly and recycling every other week and people can burn small piles of yard trash on certain months or pay a fee to bring it the dump. I knew FEMA was slow at getting things done but this is nuts .

Yes, it was awful and FEMA trailers had major issues, and New Orleans was under National Guard control for very long time.

My family told me that they think about move to Jacksonville, FL so I was ugh with mixed emotion to them.

I remember about FEMA took control in tornado ravaged area in Argo, Fultondale and Center Point (closer to Jeff State Community College).

We're not supposed to burn trash or leaves in our neighborhood. Some people who live behind us in another neighborhood sometimes burn trash. It stinks terribly. When they do that I have to stay indoors.

I am not crazy about people being allowed to burn yard trash either, it can be done for a few months I think it March and April but people try to get away with burning their yard trash at night so it hard to report them. One guy was trying to burn a tree that fallen in a storm and the smoke was getting into some condo units . A neighbor who was in her late 80's who had COPD told me the smoke was making it hard for her to breath so I went out to try and find the fire. A guy had a fire going and was burning up a whole fallen tree.
I tried to tell him that was illegal and he didn't care so I went to a church that was next to his house and asked if I could use their phone to call
the fire department and I reported the fire and told them I was doing it for my elderly neighbor who had COPD . The fire truck got there in no time and had the guy put his fire out and gave him a warning. I told the firemen I tried to get him to put the fire out so they wouldn't have to come out and I was told it was OK that is was what they're here for. My elderly neighbor would call me when she needed help b/c she had no family close by . The smoke was really thick and he had a lot more wood he was trying to burn. We can't made big fire and we need to get a permit to have a fire this guy didn't do this .

My sympathies to your neighbor Reba.

I not sure what my kind DNA test my sister was going to use but at least they were honest with her and said their test worked best with men instead of just taking her money.

I have attached an chart... to give you an idea, there's three different kind of DNA tests: for Male only: yDNA test (that only father, grandfather side). For Female (and male too as they do carry X chromosomes) mtDNA test (Only mother, grandmother side). The autosomal DNA test is the whole family - all parents, grandparents etc.

If your sister want to do DNA testing to find out more about the family tree and where they're from. She can do autosomal DNA test, this will do whole family (both of her fathers and mothers sides)or mtDNA test only focus on to her mother, her grandma, her great grandma etc all on only one female line. Your sister won't need her brother to do yDNA testing.
