ISIS threatens beheading of two Japanese hostages

Sadly, our hostage-rescue record hasn't been very good recently. :(

Linguistic analysis is only useful if the terrorist who is speaking is actually in his home region. Recently, the spokesman in these beheading videos appears to be an ex-patriot Brit, so that's not useful for determining a location.

Local informants can be useful but you have to first have trustworthy informants in each area. Right now, trustworthiness has been a serious problem. The other problem is our dismal record of not supporting those who do help us. After they help us, we often throw them under the bus and abandon them. Disgraceful!

I think I said a version of this earlier. But, in regard to what I have added the bold to I think it could also be someone that learned their English from someone that was a native UK English speaker but not actually an ex-pat Brit.

Linguistic analysis supposedly can distinguish between a native and a non-native. One of the reasons they use it.

Either way, if the speaker isn't speaking in the region he's from, the linguistics won't help pinpoint a location.

If a guy from Brooklyn is making videos in Dallas, linguistics aren't going to lead to him.

Terror groups have their main hangouts, yes, but they are also mobile.

hostage? uh.... neither is ISIS... why do I have to explain things to you like you're 5 years old?

my point is - we can find just about anybody... just like we found Osama Bin Laden and his people.... and killed them.

you may be surprised. Lot of notorious terrorist organizations have held hostages for a few years to even several years.

you forgot about Boko Haram already? c'mon...

not really. you really are clueless about our capabilities, eh?

in intelligence agencies, there are analysts of all kinds... the linguists can analyze the terrorists' voices to get an approximate location all the way down to even a province/town. and there are other analysts to analyze the geographic properties shown in the video to pinpoint a country/region. a video contains tons of clues that you don't even notice.

audio experts to listen for any subtle sound in video... cyber experts to trace the video upload... and.... the good ole' fashioned way... asking and paying the locals in exchange of information. and so many more.
Nodding... let's talk about beheaded hostages. Why didn't we rescue them before they killed the hostages? There were so many hostages already beheaded while, as you said, we have our capabilities to find them.

Reba already pointed it out. It's not that easy. If Japan asks us to rescue them, it's an impossible mission. There's a deadline coming soon.

OK, we killed OBL after we spent billions of dollars to bomb the areas where CIA thought that he was hiding. What's wrong with CIA who gave a lot of misinformation? Bomb, bomb and bomb, then oops, OBL was not found in those areas for at least 5 years. My point is that USA can do it but the missions are either successful or unsuccessful.

Caz12 and WDYS, I suggest you both don't come here in this thread if you can't face the bad news (but you may be able to hear about it through other sources anyway). I understand how you feel. I hope Japan will be successful to have those hostages released somehow (ransom or no ransom).

If I am an employee of CNN or whatever and it tells me to go there, my response would be "Screw you!".

He is called Jihard jonny and I believe he white English convert they have a good idea what he may look like and have narrowed his accent down to somewhere in north London..the mosques in London must have information of white London converts who are married I would imagine governments are aware. his wife also white woman is in a Syrian women's division of ISIS her aim in life is to behead a British Man with blunt knife. WDYS and me made valid comments.wdys has every right to make comment as I have to agree with her

No, I mean if you hate to know what happens next like WYDS said, close your eyes if you don't want to know.

If Japan can convince the terrorists (ISIS) that Japanese people will not ever touch their territory anymore, ISIS might let the hostages go without ransom hopefully. However ISIS doesn't give a response so far.

What else is new. Anyone who steps into Syria or Iraq ought to know the risks involved.

This is so sad and sickening and it make my stomach hurt because all these terrorist are killing innocent peoples for no reason at all and it make want to throw up!

Japan might pay. they are really concerned with saving face and their honor for many centuries....But nothing wrong to be embarrassed like us Americans are

The deadline imposed by ISIS for Japan to pay $200 million to free two captives passed, starting what the terrorist group called a countdown clock on Friday, even as questions swirled about the authenticity of the initial tape and whether the pair is even alive. . .

ISIS deadline passes for Japanese hostages

The hostage video showing the hostages wearing orange jump suits and kneeling before a masked, black-clad jihadist may have been faked, experts said. New analysis of the video appears to reveal the message was shot indoors using a "green screen," and a phony backdrop, according to Veryan Khan, editorial director for the Terrorism Research and Analysis Consortium. She told The Associated Press the light source on the men in the latest videos appears to be coming from two different directions — as opposed to one bright sun, and said if the video was made outdoors in natural light, the shadows behind them should be going in one direction. Instead, they converge.

Although one of the hostage's jumpsuits flutters in a breeze, Khan said she believes a fan caused the movement and noted that wind in the desert would be noisy and affect the sound quality of the statements being made by the knife-wielding man. It would also kick up dust, and none seems apparent, she said.

Experts poring over the slickly-produced videos believe they were made in an area south of Raqqa in northern Syria, the self-declared capital of the Islamic State group….

I heard on the news the ##%@# Isis have 24 more hostages beside these two men . :(

I read that one of the Japanese hostages was kidnapped last August. Maybe 24 hostages were kidnapped at the same time when ISIS started taking over several cities.

Sadly, second Japanese hostage was beheaded. Jordan government was willing to release the female terrorist as long as ISIS could prove that the kidnapped pilot from Jordan is still alive but ISIS didn't respond.

can't believe Jordan government threatened to execute all ISIS prisoners if their pilot was killed. wow.

I would do the same thing. Unlike Obama, I know how to say "Islamic Terrorist".
