This is animation before the amateur video surfaced.

I heard on another forum that "junior" pilots have been known to not "over-ride" their superiors even if things look bad. And this can be worse if they're from a culture where people do not over step their superiors even if it's a situation like this.
(Not sure I worded that properly to convey what was said).

But when asked if pilot error was to blame, Hersman said the crash landing was still under investigation.

Hersman said her team plans to interview the pilots in the coming days. The identities of the cockpit crew have not been made public by Asiana Airlines or the NTSB.

The NTSB has ruled out weather as a problem and said that conditions were right for a "visual landing."

But investigators are looking into whether construction at the airport may have played a role.

I am confused by the last quote.

oh... my..... lordy..... looks like it was most likely the result of a rookie error... what in the world was captain thinking? he should not have let a rookie try it out especially at an airport known for a very challenging approach.

NTSB: Pilots attempted to abort landing 1.5 seconds before impact - CNN.com
South Korean and NTSB investigators will jointly question Lee Kang-gook, the pilot who was sitting in the captain's seat of Asiana Flight 214, on Monday, Choi Jeong-ho, the head of South Korean's Aviation Policy Bureau, said.

Lee had 43 hours of experience flying the B777-200, he said.

They will also question Lee Jeong-min, who was sitting in the co-pilot's seat, Choi said.

43 hours of flying.... *smh*

OIC. Different from US military pilots. It is the duty of the other pilots to notify the senior pilot of any problems or mistakes.

Who is responsible for let rookie pilot to be on fly? Airline or South Korean government?

Are you saying that the news are incidating that the 'senior' pilot let the rookie land the plane? That 43 hours under the belt sounds not enough to allow such rookie to be on a commerical flight....

that's what the news said. it's fine for junior pilot to fly a plane mid-air but to land especially at an airport with challenging approach? no thank you!

To clarify, he was not a rookie.. He was experienced pilot on 747 and other types and he has flown into SF. He only had 43 hours on 777 but over 10,000 hours on other Boeing planes.

Somehow things went horribly wrong on this flight and I think it shouldn't have happened at all with experience of co-pilot and this pilot but sadly things went very wrong.

I feel bad for that pilot.

the rookie pilot had 43 hours in type other word 43 hours flight time in the 777
his flight time in other aircraft 747 was much higher.

also,

NTSB briefing where they discussed what they have from the cockpit voice recorder and the data recorder is sounds very bad for the pilot.

Airspeed significantly lower than planned verbally. (137 knots planned) [157.55 mph]

No concerns until 7 seconds from impact when one of the pilots calls for more speed.

Stick shaker 4 seconds before impact. (stall warning loss of lift soon)

1.5 seconds from impact one of the pilots calls for a go around. see note beow about time required for increase power.

NTSB noted that from the data recorder the engines were responding once the crew tried to power up.

Just sounds to me like they came in too slow, too low, and didn't realize how bad it was until too late. ~ Swell; The pilot had just 43hrs in 777's, but the co-pilot had 3220hrs. at a US airline they wouldn’t even hire them with less than 5000 hours or so…
CRM (cockpit resource management issue) Korean airlines and Asian Airlines, , CRM is basically nonexistent in Asian carriers. The hierarchy is so rigid that the FO would NEVER dare question a captain!
Like warning him that the airspeed is too slow…
Also, crew does NOT need permission to perform a go around, they can do it any time they want without asking! Also engines were at idle power, these big Pratt & Whitney tubrofans need to 5-10 seconds
Spool up to power from idle…

So the next time you get on a plane, ask for the pilot's resume and how many hours he/she has flying the plane!!

Man: I want see your resume about how many hours are you flying the plane.
Pilot: Sure, there is my report.
Man: *Read pilot's report*
Man: Wait, you only flied for 40 hours?
Pilot: Yes sir
Man: Oh ****, that's not enough.
Pilot: I'm sorry and you can file the complaint with Korean Air.
Man: Ugh, ok.
Agent: What's wrong?
Man: This pilot has little experience - only 40 hours so I'm no safe to get on the plane.
Agent: I'm sorry to hear.
Man: I want refund, please.
