Difference between HARD of HEARING and DEAF

Deaf people invite me to visit them and have fun playing with their pets and eating good food.

Hoh people have lots of angst, worry about where they fit in, and apparently don't have pets for companionship and joy.

You can call me lots of things but petless isn't one of them. I've practically got a farm!

Do you have a purely conductive loss as you use a BAHA?

Conductive losses are easily aided and you don't get the distortion problems that you get with sensorineural losses.

That properly why you can use the phone easily?!

Actually mines is mixed mostly conductive with sensorineural loss. and yes I wear the BAHA, the phone is fine for the most part because its directly against my ear, in everyday conversations it gets difficult, and when it becomes a group or when there's background noise, I mostly just shut out. I say what or can you say that again and people act like i didn't say anything because they don't wanna repeat themselves. So in those situations i tune out

I could use the phone with my right ear when it had sever to profound loss, I'd need repeats but I could do it. Not now that I've dipped into profound.

Try asking HOH ferrets the difference between deaf, HOH, and hearing ferrets. Do the same with cats. Maybe they'll laugh at you and think all this is funny. What is the point? We human overanalyze too much. Deaf, HOH, and hearing ferrets just want to run around and hide stuffs. They'll say "Ha, got ya!!! Let's them chase me. Play, play, play!!!" All those strange humans sit and ask strange questions. Deaf, HOH, and hearing cats are kings and queens. They want their catnips or else they'll be sad. What was the terminology, again?
What happened to all the gerbils?

Its funny I cant hear at all without my HA, but if you yell real loud I might pick up a bit??? Now if you tap/bang on something I can feel the vibration with my body, that is the way most people I know get my attention.. its odd that I can feel it, just simple tapping. Let alone see in the dark.

I am confused I have moderate to severe hearing loss, I am mod -severe to profound in my left ear an mod-severe in my right, and I still talk on the phone...

I use the speaker phone feature myself.....

Personally I never understand why these labels matter so damn much. What does it matter what people think of you or wonder why you're taking the course? Are they paying for it? Do people taking Spanish or Classical Greek get these hang ups? But to answer your question - or try to anyway, I've always viewed HOH to mean that you rely on hearing aids to do and/or enjoy your daily routine, and although you may or may not always understand what is being said, you do have enough hearing to benefit from HA. It's a long winded answer that generalizes so just be yourself instead and the Hell what anyone thinks.

There are no known proof that gerbils can have a hearing loss. If someone can find a proof or 2, we would all share that :).

I think they used deaf gerbils in the stem cell experiments to grow new hair cells and cure them of their deafness.

Cats were used for experimental implantation trials with the CI too ...

No. I disagree.

I consider myself a capital D Deaf, and I do choose to hear with my HAs. It doesn't make me inferior to other Deaf.

None of my Deaf friends have ever criticized me for my choice to wear HAs - they don't mock me or judge me for it.

Ditto. Its been like this for years. Its just about attitude approach.

Now I understand the analogy. I like your point.

...and getting catnips is a problem...because all of them wants it but it will be given to all unfairly due to their different levels of obedience to the normalcy

That would be a bigger problem than whom may be deaf, HOH, or hearing. How do you divide catnips? That is more important than labels.

So, if they breed humans with cat genes, and we get high on catnip, wouldn't they ban catnip as an illegal drug then?
lmao

I'm the same as Frisky.

I wear HAs, but they only help me hear noises. I can't make out speech, and certainly cannot hear the phone, even though I can speak.

I am active at our local Deaf club - we play games (board games, poker, etc. -- that type of games) etc.

I have always considered myself Deaf even though I can hear noises with HAs.

Same here.

And FYI -- that wasn't meant to be argumentive. I guess it is my perspective / opinion, which may not be the same as others'.

I don't know why many here get ridiculed from Deaf people for wearing hearing aids in their local Deaf communities. Here in the MD/VA/DC/PA Deaf communities, I have never encountered anyone ridiculing or rejecting people for wearing hearing aids or CIs. Maybe it is because they live in smaller towns and the Deaf people there are more ignorant?

The only rejection or ridicule I have seen if the person demonstrate audism thinking. Saying that Deaf people should learn to function in the hearing world, are isolating themselves, or that Deaf people who have no speech skills aren't as smart. Things like that.

I consider myself both HoH & deaf. They're jus labels. Deaf (uppercase D) is a culture. I believe, and someone correct me if I'm wrong (and I'm sure they will), that a hearing person can be part of the Deaf culture.

Yes, a hearing person can be considered Deaf.
